People often ask, "Don't you worry about the hedgehogs when you release them back into the wild?"
The simple answer is, "Yes we do!" but once they have been released into a suitable habitat, as fit healthy hedgehogs, their future is really in the hands of fate and fortune. All we can do then is wish them 'bonne chance'!
Sometimes, when hedgehogs are released via a garden where there is a regularly maintained feeding station and water bowl, and they may become regular visitors. Then we are always over-the-moon when we get an occasional message saying, "We saw him/her in the garden last night, he/she is looking well".
Occasionally, we will release a hedgehog via our own garden at Hulse Towers, ๐กโ๐๐ข๐โ ๐ค๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ค๐๐ฆ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ก ๐๐ฃ๐๐๐๐๐๐ข๐๐๐ก๐๐๐ ๐กโ๐ ๐๐๐๐, and then there is always a chance that they might become regular visitors to one or more of our three feeding stations. It is always a source of joy when we see an ex-patient visiting the garden again!
The hedgehog in this short video is 'W***y' who was brought to us with bone fractures in both hind legs . After treating and caring for him for six weeks, we released him fit and healthy into our garden about 18-months ago.
W***y disappeared for a few weeks after release but then he reappeared and became a nightly visitor. He even hibernated in one of our hedgehog houses last winter!
He has visited almost every night this year, since coming out of hibernation in late March, and he's a real character.
And he doesn't take any nonsense from the two young foxes who were born this spring and visit every night!
The hissing and the posture is usually enough to make the cubs back off, if he thinks they are taking liberties, but he is not beyond giving them a prickly headbutt on the snout occasionally, just to remind them who the boss is.
We hope the video raises a smile or two!
