Rick and Mandy Hulse would like to offer their heartfelt gratutude to all of those lovely stalwart people who are involved in organising and running Roughley's Bike Show!

The Hulse Towers Hedgehog Refuge was once again honoured to be one of the fortunate charities that have been chosen to benefit from the profits of this magnificent annual motorcycle show in Stockport.

Last night, November 8th 2025, at the Town Hall Tavern in Stockport, Harley Roughley (2nd generation bike show hero) presented us with a fabulous donation of ยฃ500.00 from the proceeds of this year's show.

For a small charity like ours, ยฃ500.00 is a huge donation and it will be instrumental in saving a lot of sick or injured hedgehogs that would otherwise have perished in the wild.

In this, the 25th year of Roughley's Bike Show, the organisers donated an incredible ยฃ33,000.00, to an eclectic range of twenty-five charities and/or other non-profit groups. A truly staggering feat for a one day annual event that is organised by a small, but perfectly formed, group of stout-hearted, dedicated, unpaid volunteers!

Love Bikers! Love Hedgehogs, Love Life!

People often ask, "Don't you worry about the hedgehogs when you release them back into the wild?"

The simple answer is, "Yes we do!" but once they have been released into a suitable habitat, as fit healthy hedgehogs, their future is really in the hands of fate and fortune. All we can do then is wish them 'bonne chance'!

Sometimes, when hedgehogs are released via a garden where there is a regularly maintained feeding station and water bowl, and they may become regular visitors. Then we are always over-the-moon when we get an occasional message saying, "We saw him/her in the garden last night, he/she is looking well".

Occasionally, we will release a hedgehog via our own garden at Hulse Towers, ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘”โ„Ž ๐‘ค๐‘’ ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ๐‘  ๐‘š๐‘–๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘“๐‘ข๐‘™ ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘›๐‘œ๐‘ก ๐‘œ๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘๐‘ข๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘Ž, and then there is always a chance that they might become regular visitors to one or more of our three feeding stations. It is always a source of joy when we see an ex-patient visiting the garden again!

The hedgehog in this short video is 'W***y' who was brought to us with bone fractures in both hind legs . After treating and caring for him for six weeks, we released him fit and healthy into our garden about 18-months ago.

W***y disappeared for a few weeks after release but then he reappeared and became a nightly visitor. He even hibernated in one of our hedgehog houses last winter!

He has visited almost every night this year, since coming out of hibernation in late March, and he's a real character.

And he doesn't take any nonsense from the two young foxes who were born this spring and visit every night!

The hissing and the posture is usually enough to make the cubs back off, if he thinks they are taking liberties, but he is not beyond giving them a prickly headbutt on the snout occasionally, just to remind them who the boss is.

We hope the video raises a smile or two!
