Creative spaces allow young people to express their identity, lived experience, and the realities of their lives in ways that more traditional approaches often cannot and is why some young people find it more helpful than CBT.

A more holistic, creative approach recognises that support is not one-size-fits-all. It creates space for individuality, expression, and different ways of healing.

“This year's Mental Health Awareness Week is about taking action to support good mental health for ourselves, for someone else and for all of us. Even small actions can help us feel hopeful and less powerless. And while our individual actions matter, when we come together we are even more powerful.”

Take action today and sign up to our Mental Health and Arts Symposium and find out how creative offers can support young people's mental health.

As part of The Future Is Ours Festival 2026 the symposium will take place online Thursday 11th June at 12.30-2.30pm.

Through performance and discussion, you’ll experience the impact creativity can have on a young person’s mental health and emotional wellbeing when they are given voice and agency, and supported throughout the process by artists and mental health practitioners.

Gabby talks about how it is important to have service providers and mental heal practitioners listen to your lived experience and respect young people.

This is a common theme we hear from young people time and time again at 42nd Street and The Horsfall and belive it is something we can all do.

We've worked alongside young people for over 45 years at 42nd Street fand 10 years through The Horsfall. Join our symposium to find out more about what we have learnt, how we work alongside young people and how the creative work at The Horsfall helps make young people feel truly heard.

We've found creativity to be beneficial as a stand-alone support, within counselling, alongside and pre or post other therapeutic work and this depends on the young people and where they're at.

Gabby shares how creativity after talking therapy allowed her to process trauma and connect with her experience more deeply.

We see all young people as creative beings and our role as simply to nurture this and work with what people enjoy rather than telling them what to do and what they should create.

We believe creativity's real value is from the open explorationn. An exploration of the artist, experience and uniqueness within each person and believe there are vaste ways to express and get in touch and express our creative nature.

Our approach is about encouraging that natural creativity, supporting young people to explore it freely and helping them recognise it in themselves.

Young people are often the revolutionaries of thought and possibility. Seeing things with fresh eyes they're often asking why not, how things can be and not yet limited by the reasons things 'can’t' happen in the way we sometimes become as we age. Instead, young people often bring a energetic vitality, urgency and willingness to embrace change that can help create a better future.

We see every young person who walks through our door as an artist, regardless of what they believe their skills or experience to be. Nurturing, encouraging and harnessing that creative energy is essential, so it is not lost but carried forward throughout life.

The benefits are both individual and collective. When young people are supported to see themselves as creative beings, they gain confidence, expression and resilience and society gains imagination, innovation and new ways of thinking.

🎟️ Join our upcoming Creative Mental Health and Arts Symposium on Thursday 11th June (12:30pm–2:30pm) to see how we nurture this creativity.

Throughout much of our work across 42nd Street, not just through The Horsfall, we hear from young people that they often don’t feel listened to and many services don’t meet their needs.

We’re pleased when people tell us that being truly listened to, heard, and understood has made a difference to their journey but we don’t believe this should be an anomaly.

If we want to see the positive changes in mental health that young people deserve, we need to listen more closely to their experiences, understand what would support them better, and ensure services amplify their voices.

For us this has meant working creatively in collaborative partnership with young people and creativity has proved both a therapeutic tool for young people to process experiences and, when they wish, a way for them to be more widely heard and share their voice in support of much needed changes.

🎟️ Join our upcoming Creative Mental Health and Arts Symposium on Thursday 11th June (12:30pm–2:30pm) to learn more about the ways we work alongside young people.
