Brief History of Platt Chapel

It was a Unitarian Chapel. Unitarians believe in the Unity or unipersonality of God, as opposed to the doctrine of the Trinity - hence the name 'Unitarian'. Unitarianism only became legal in 1813 but was particularly influential in the 19th century.

The chapel was founded in 1646, and later closed in 1970.

Alan Marsden reported that the Congregational Church that met at Birch Chapel, having survived the persecutions that followed the Commonwealth’s collapse, were evicted in the 1690s. Ralph Worsley, son of the great General Charles Worsley, donated land close by his family home of Platt Hall upon which this homeless congregation might meet. In time, however, it drifted into drab ultra-liberalism, proclaiming itself Unitarian in the early nineteenth century

In 1700 Platt Chapel was opened for the use of the Nonconformists. The local landed gentry, the Worsleys of Platt Hall, (donors of the site), the Edges and the Siddalls being the principal members of the congregation. The Chapel continued in use until 1970, the teaching becoming Unitarian in the course of the 18th century.. During the middle of the 19th century there were alterations to the Chapel and in 1909 Wilmslow Road was widened, thus reducing the size of the surrounding graveyard.

After its closure in 1970 it became the home of the Manchester Amateur Photographic Society, but they left the premises and it has since been used as a live music venue, then an office, until recently when the RCCG restored it back to a Place of WORSHIP.

This grade II listed Unique Chapel, is set in the grounds of Platt Fields Park in the heart of South Manchester

After 54 years of it's closure, the RCCG re-opens Platt Chapel, Manchester, restoring it back as the Lord's house of prayer.

Since its closure in 1970, it became the home of the Manchester Amateur Photographic Society, but they left the premises and it has since been abandoned, then for sometimes used as an office and now back to it's original purpose - a HOUSE OF PRAYERS.

Platt Chapel is at the south-west end of the Platt estate and the Platt Field Park, adjoining Wilmslow Road and almost opposite Old Hall Lane. It's address is 186 Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield, Manchester, M14 5LL.

It is now occupied by the RCCG, and used by a branch of the Worldwide Church - RCCG has branches in 129 nations worldwide.
