Last night, Trafford’s Planning Committee refused the application which would have resulted in around 10,000 trees being removed for warehouse development.
Thank you to Councillors Rupali Paul, Rob Duncan, Nathan Evans and Phil Eckersley for speaking up against the proposal, to Friends of Carrington Moss for their campaigning, and to the many local residents who made their voices heard.
Despite officers recommending approval, councillors listened to residents and rejected the scheme. A major win for Carrington Moss and our local green spaces.
Carrington Moss Planning Application
Last night, Trafford’s Planning Committee refused application 109755/OUT/22 against officer recommendation.
As Opposition Spokesperson on the Committee, I spent a significant amount of time studying the proposal, the environmental evidence, and the policy position before reaching my decision.
While I recognise the importance of economic growth and regeneration in Carrington, I ultimately concluded that the harm to the natural environment was too great to support the application in its current form.
In particular, I did not believe sufficient weight had been given to the importance of the Grade A woodland and wetland habitat that would have been cleared to make way for industrial units of up to 22 metres in height, especially given the site’s proximity to existing homes and a major future residential community.
I was also not sufficiently convinced that the proposed replacement planting and mitigation measures provided adequate certainty that the lost habitats, ecology and biodiversity could genuinely be replaced over time.
Planning decisions must carefully balance economic growth with environmental responsibility, and in this case I did not believe that balance had been achieved.
I believe the best developments are those that work with the natural environment, not against it.
