The Mining Remediation Authority owns, on behalf of the country, the vast majority of the coal in Great Britain, as well as former coal mines. A non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero established by Parliament in 1994 to undertake specific statutory responsibilities.

⚠️ Update: Holme Wood, Bradford

In early May, a large ground collapse appeared in a field near Copgrove Road, caused by an old coal mine shaft beneath the surface.

We moved quickly. Within four weeks, our team worked alongside Bradford Council to investigate the site, confirm the cause, and begin making it safe. Stone infilling of the shaft was completed on 4 June, removing the immediate danger.

Work to design a permanent solution is now underway, with further drilling and soil sampling to follow. We'll share updates as the project progresses.

A new way to explore Great Britain's mining heritage is now available 🔍

We’ve launched a digital resource giving access to thousands of historical coal mining plans, developed in partnership with the British Geological Survey.

For the first time, these original records can be searched, viewed and explored from anywhere, helping people reconnect with the mining legacy beneath their communities and understand how past generations shaped the landscape we see today.

From former mining families to local history groups, this opens up a unique part of our shared history to everyone.

Ahead of World Environment Day tomorrow, we returned to Hag Wood to see how our special nature recovery project is really taking shape.

In this latest update, property manager Mark Carey and principal nature recovery manager Gemma Gregory revisit the site in County Durham to reflect on the transformation so far – from dense conifer plantation to a thriving, regenerating woodland.

Working in partnership with North East Community Forest and Scottish Woodlands Ltd, the site is already starting to feel very different … with more than 2,000 native hardwood trees planted and the natural regeneration of oak, beech, hazel, birch and rowan, together with a new pond and developing wetland habitat.

Watch as they explore the early signs of success – from newly planted grassland areas to returning key indicator plants showing that this previously ancient woodland is beginning to recover once more.

Update: Joint statement with Clackmannanshire Council regarding the ongoing incident in Coalsnaughton:

As part of the continuing work to keep affected residents updated, partner organisations held an update meeting for those residents on Tuesday 2 June.

The priority of all Local Resilience Partners continues to be the safety and welfare of everyone involved, our officers remain in the local area to provide guidance and support to residents during what we appreciate is a worrying and uncertain time.

During the meeting Carl Banton, our Chief Operations Director, explained that work is continuing at pace to establish the cause of this incident. A further 8 weeks will be needed for us to investigate the cause of the ground movement. Carl outlined the works that have been undertaken and shared images to help residents understand how the ground is moving.

Our thoughts are with the residents affected by this incident, and we understand that this news will be concerning for them.

We appreciate the support and concern shown by the wider Clackmannanshire community, and encourage everyone to follow the information and advice provided by the Council and our Local Resilience Partners.

UPDATE: As a precaution, the Local Resilience Partnership took the decision to ask residents to evacuate on nearby streets Langour and Nechtan Drive, meaning a total number of 97 homes have now been asked to evacuate.

The priority of all Local Resilience Partners continues to be the safety of everyone involved, and we are doing everything we can to support Clackmannanshire Council and those affected to respond as quickly and safely as possible.

UPDATE: At around 9.30pm on Monday 18 May 2026, we were made aware of ground movement at Benbuck View, Coalsnaughton, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. As a precaution, 30 properties have been evacuated.

We understand how worrying this is for residents, and we are doing everything we can to support those affected and respond as quickly and safely as possible.

Work is continuing at pace to establish the cause of this incident, with multiple specialist teams on site to support residents and ensure safety, with detailed engineering assessments taking place.

Traffic management and additional security measures have been put in place, and we continue to work closely with Clackmannanshire Council to manage local services. Utility providers are ensuring that utility supplies are being safely isolated.

Our priority remains the safety of residents, our people and partners, and we will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
