As Volunteers' Week 2026 draws towards a close, we wanted to take a moment to to pause and say a big thank you to our volunteers and supporters who help us.

The UK has roughly 166,000 formal voluntary organisations. However, including grassroots community groups and social enterprises, total non-profit entities exceed 500,000. Around 14 million people formally volunteer annually, with roughly 7 to 8 million volunteering at least once a month.

An even bigger thank you to each and every one of you. !

Earlier today we were visited by members of The Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire.

The members had an extended day visit that started with visiting Mansfield Fire Museum, followed by lunch.
Afterwards they were given a presentation by Tim Marston of the East Midlands Fire Investigation Dog Unit, this followed a demonstration by Tim and Fire Dog “Barney” in action.
The visit concluded with a look around Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service Mansfield Fire Station Aerial Ladder Platform. 🚒🚒

We have really enjoyed having you with us today “thank you”…..

The Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire is the county's principal historical and archaeological society. It has a long pedigree, having
been established in 1897, and is named in honour of Dr Robert Thoroton who published the first history of Nottinghamshire in 1677.

We're urging the public to follow national drone safety rules after we have seen a rise in drones being flown near active emergency scenes.

We have seen an increase in people attending incidents and operating drones in close proximity to emergency responders, prompting a reminder about the Civil Aviation Authority’s Drone Code.

Flying drones close to, or directly over, emergency incidents is strongly discouraged and, in many cases, unlawful. The Drone Code makes clear that unmanned aircraft must not be used near areas where emergency services are working unless specific permission has been granted.

Unauthorised drone activity at incidents can create a significant safety risk and may hinder emergency operations, including:

👎 preventing or delaying the landing of an air ambulance or other emergency aircraft;
👎 interfering with our own operational drone use;
👎 placing responding crews, casualties and the wider public at risk.

Flying a drone in these circumstances may constitute a breach of the Drone Code and may be a prosecutable offence.

Recent prosecutions have demonstrated that enforcement action, including fines and seizure of equipment, can and will be taken where drone use interferes with emergency service operations.
