MAJOR INCIDENT

At 07:03 hours on Friday 29th May, the rescue pumps from Market Drayton and Whitchurch, along with a Welfare Officer from Headquarters, were mobilised by Shropshire Fire Control to support our colleagues from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service at a significant fire involving a large agricultural property at Wrinehill, near Bridgmere, Cheshire.

As the crew from Market Drayton left the station, a large column of black smoke could already be seen rising from the incident, more than 11 miles away.

While en route, crews were informed that the incident had been escalated to a "Make Pumps 10", meaning that ten fire appliances were required to attend.

Upon arrival, firefighters were confronted with a severe and rapidly developing fire involving an empty poultry shed measuring approximately 100 metres by 100 metres and covering around four acres – roughly the size of two football pitches.

Crews from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were already working hard to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings using main jets.

Firefighters from Market Drayton and Whitchurch, together with crews from Malpas and Middlewich, were tasked with establishing a water relay to provide an additional water supply to the fireground.

This involved utilising a fire hydrant and a brook located more than half a mile from the scene. Crews laid 28 lengths of 70mm hose between the water source and the base pump to maintain a continuous supply of water.

Due to the scale of the incident, the large number of resources required, and the significant smoke plume being produced, a major incident was declared.

Two High Volume Pumping Units from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised. However, due to limited water availability in the area, they were ultimately unable to be deployed effectively.

The Scorpion High Reach Extending Turret from Macclesfield was also brought into operation to assist with firefighting efforts.

As part of the major incident response, support was provided by Cheshire Police, and the North West Ambulance Service, including members of the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

The large smoke plume, visible for many miles, resulted in North West Fire Control receiving numerous emergency calls from concerned members of the public.

Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the incident, using main jets, ground monitors, and the Scorpion to bring the fire under control and prevent further fire spread.

Despite the best efforts of all crews in attendance, the building was unfortunately destroyed by fire.

Due to the substantial volumes of water required, United Utilities supplied a 33,000-litre tanker and an 18,000-litre tanker to provide additional water supplies to the incident ground.

We are pleased to report that there were no casualties.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

We would like to thank the volunteers from the Rapid Relief Team, who attended the incident and provided crews with much-needed refreshments throughout the day.

At the height of the incident, fire appliances, specialist vehicles, crews, and senior officers were in attendance from Audlem, Crewe, Nantwich, Middlewich, Congleton, Winsford, Malpas, Cheadle (Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service), Market Drayton and Whitchurch (Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service), together with the High Reach Extending Turret from Macclesfield, an Aerial Ladder Platform from Chester, a Water Bowser, Welfare Unit, High Volume Pumps from Cheshire and Greater Manchester, and a Command Unit from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The Market Drayton and Whitchurch crews were released form the incident and returned to home stations at approximately 13:00 hours.

Relief crews remained at the incident through out the day continuing to damp down and check for hotspots.

INCIDENT: At 10:39 hours on Friday, the rescue pump from Market Drayton was mobilised by Fire Control to assist West Midlands Ambulance Service with the extrication of a very poorly patient from a domestic property in Market Drayton.

Upon arrival, the Incident Commander was informed by paramedics that the patient required urgent transportation to hospital.

The difficulty facing paramedics was that the patient was located on the first floor of the property and, due to their condition, needed to remain flat to prevent any deterioration.

Unfortunately, due to the very narrow and steep staircase, combined with the presence of a stair lift, it was impossible to safely bring the patient downstairs while keeping them flat.

Following discussions between the Incident Commander and paramedics, a plan was formulated.

It was determined that the only safe method of moving the patient from the property, without worsening their condition, was to extricate them through a first-floor window.

Firefighters quickly began removing the central section of the window using an electric saw and small hand tools, while paramedics continued to stabilise and monitor the patient’s condition.

Due to the technical nature of the operation, an assistance message was sent to Fire Control requesting a second fire appliance and the specialist Heavy Rescue Tender from Wellington.

Following this request, the rescue pump from Newport was also mobilised.

Specially trained paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) also attended the incident due to the complexity of the rescue.

Upon arrival of the second appliance and Heavy Rescue Tender, a detailed rescue plan was implemented.

The patient was carefully placed onto a long board before being secured into a basket stretcher carried on the Heavy Rescue Tender. The stretcher was then attached to lines anchored to the rescue tender, with a high-level deviation point created using the HIAB crane mounted on the vehicle.

Once all equipment and safety systems had been thoroughly checked, the patient was carefully guided out through the first-floor window and slowly lowered to the roadway below, where a standard ambulance stretcher was waiting.

After being transferred from the basket stretcher onto the ambulance stretcher, the patient was conveyed to the awaiting ambulance and transported to hospital on blue lights and sirens for urgent treatment.

Our thoughts and best wishes are with the patient for a full and speedy recovery.

Due to restricted access to the property, all attending fire appliances and the HART ambulance were required to park on the main High Street. As a result, the High Street was temporarily closed while the rescue operation was carried out.

We would like to thank motorists, local businesses, and members of the public for their patience and understanding during the incident.

INCIDENT: At 20:14 hours on Wednesday, the rescue pump from Market Drayton was mobilised by Fire Control to reports of a car fire on Adderley Road at the junction with Milton Drive, Market Drayton.

Whilst leaving the station, the crew observed a large column of black smoke issuing from the general area of the reported location.

Whilst en route, Fire Control informed the Officer in Charge that they were receiving multiple 999 calls regarding the incident, with callers reporting that explosions were taking place.

Upon arrival, crews were confronted with a Range Rover Evoque that was fully involved in fire.

The Incident Commander immediately tasked two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to begin firefighting operations using two high-pressure hose reel jets.

Due to the intensity of the fire, and because magnesium components within the vehicle were reacting violently with the water being applied, a foam main jet was subsequently brought into use.

Adderley Road was closed for a period of time to allow firefighters to work safely, extinguish the fire, and protect members of the public, before one lane was later reopened.

Officers from West Mercia Police also attended the scene to assist with traffic management.

The fire was fully extinguished approximately five minutes after crews arrived on scene.
The vehicle was completely destroyed by fire, with additional damage caused to the road surface.

Crews remained at the scene for a further two hours, damping down hotspots and awaiting the arrival of vehicle recovery and highways personnel.

We are pleased to report that there were no injuries as a result of this incident.

The cause of the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

We would like to thank members of the public for their kind offers of tea and coffee, and motorists for their patience and understanding whilst crews dealt with the incident.

BREAKING NEWS:

We are excited to announce that from today, all water used to extinguish fires will now be high-visibility dyed to improve night-time operations. 🌈💧

After extensive “testing” (and several very colourful fire engines), we have found that adding a bright dye to our firefighting water helps crews by:
✅ Making it easier to see water coverage more clearly in low light
✅ Improving accuracy of the delivery of water when tackling fires
✅ Looking extremely impressive while putting out fires

Members of the community may now notice brightly coloured water at incidents—don’t be alarmed, it’s completely safe… just slightly more fabulous than usual water.

We are currently trialling:
🔵 “Blue Blast” for standard fires
🟢 “Green Stream” for outdoor incidents
🔴 “Red Rush” for, well… dramatic effect!

Let us know which colour you’d like to see next 👀

The manufacturer of this new product goes by the name of slooF lirpA.

INCIDENT: At 17:05 hours on Thursday 5th March, the rescue pumps from Market Drayton, Hodnet and Prees, along with the rescue tender from Wellington and an operations officer from headquarters, were all mobilised by fire control, to reports of a (RTC) road traffic collision, with persons reported to be trapped, which had occurred on the A53 at Market Drayton, between the Gingerbread roundabout and the Drayton fields roundabout.

On arrival at the scene the crew found that the incident involved a head on collision between two vehicles, a car and an LGV (Large Goods Vehicle).

Both vehicles had sustained a significant amount of damage, with the car coming to rest in a field.

The driver of the car, an adult male was found to be trapped and was being cared for by two off duty firefighters and members of the public.

Crews quickly set about getting hydraulic Holmatro cutting and spreading equipment to work to extricate the trapped driver.

A firefighter trained in advanced trauma care entered the car and took over care of the driver during the extrication.

Officers from West Mercia Police were on scene and the A53 was closed from the Gingerbread man roundabout to the Drayton field’s roundabout.

Crews used the hydraulic cutters and spreaders to remove the doors and roof of the car to gain full access to the trapped driver.

An air ambulance carrying members of the critical care team arrived on scene. A full handover of the driver’s condition was given to the team and they took over the care of the casualty.

Once freed from the car the driver was transported to hospital via a land ambulance for further assessment and treatment to what we hope are relatively minor injuries.

The driver of the LGV was shaken but did not receive any injuries in the collision.

We would like to thank our off duty colleagues and the members of the public who cared for the trapped driver before the arrival of the emergency services.

We send our best wishes to the injured driver for a full recovery from their injuries.

INCIDENT: At 17:05 hours on Friday 20th February, the rescue pump from Market Drayton was mobilised by fire control, to a (RTC) road traffic collision, which had occurred at the warrant road cross roads on the A41 at Tern Hill, near Market Drayton.

On arrival at the scene the crew found that the incident involved a single vehicle which had been in a significant collision with a lamppost and roadside signage, and had come to rest off the road in some trees.

The vehicle involved was a fully electric Tesla which had sustained significant damage to the front end.

Our colleagues from West Mercia Police who were first on scene, were concerned that there was a hissing sound coming from the vehicle and a very strong smell of battery acid.

The crew quickly set about using a piece of specialist software carried on all (MDTs) mobile data terminals on Shropshires front line fire appliances, to locate the isolation points for the electrical systems of the vehicle involved.

Once this information was gathered the crew set about making both the high voltage and normal electrical systems of the vehicle safe.

Once the vehicle had been made safe the incident was handed over to officers from West Mercia Police to arrange for recovery.

We can confirm that there were no persons injured in this incident. The driver of the vehicle had been taken from the scene by the police.
