Wollerton Old Hall Garden

Wollerton Old Hall Garden Wollerton Old Hall Garden is an example of horticultural excellence set in the heart of the Shropshire countryside.

The garden has been designed and developed by Lesley and John Jenkins since 1984. It is set around a 16th Century Hall and has developed into an important modern garden in the English Garden tradition with echoes of Arts and Crafts. It covers 4 acres, is intensely cultivated and depending upon plant interest, visits can take between 2 and 4 hours. The garden is now open until the end of September on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays; Thursdays and Fridays only in September, from 11am to 5pm.

A short update on Rosa ‘Wollerton Old Hall’.The first shot shows it in climbing mode having been planted there 5 years ago after 2 years as a shrub in a pot.Lesley then decided to replan the small Courtyard Garden and bought 80 bare root roses . 50 of these were planted in twin beds with the intention of growing them as shrubs. The second photo shows them today in what is their 3rd season so we seem to be ok with the pruning.

Rose time! In the first we have The Generous Gardenernext to Wollerton Old Hall(and then in closeup) all fronted by Lavandula ‘Hidcote’.All these plants given maximum care
The third shows Nature’s effort On the left is a philadelphus seedling, 9 feet tall with an overpowering scent, probably coming in part from a melanocalyx 20 yards away. Across the path are flowering seedlings of an original Abutilon vitifolium “Album’. In the darkness in between is the annual battle between Astrantia major and Ornithogalum, each in their own way perfect.Nature does this so easily!

We are so sad to hear of the passing of John Ravenscroft VMH. Plantsman extraordinary,it was he who sold us our first plants in 1969,and continued to inspire us here at Wollerton over so many years. We were so pleased that he was able to attend the opening of the new Well Garden 2 years ago..Our condolences to his family and many friends.
