🔴 My Community Alert - Humberside Fire & Rescue Service 🔴

A Check That Could Save a Life

During Carers Week, we’re recognising the vital role carers play in keeping loved ones safe and highlighting how important home safety checks can be in preventing serious incidents.

A working smoke alarm on every floor can double the chances of surviving a fire. We’re encouraging everyone to take a few moments to test their alarms to make sure they are working and sounding properly and, where possible, to support relatives, friends or neighbours who may appreciate help checking theirs.

Sarah Wilkinson, Head of Prevention, said:
“Carers do an incredible job supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. Taking a few minutes to check that smoke alarms are working during a visit is a simple step that can make a life-saving difference. It’s a small action that offers real peace of mind.”

As your local fire service, we offer home fire safety advice. You can also use the links below to find out more and check if you’re eligible for a free Home Fire Safety Visit.

Warning for online shoppers after spike in criminals gaining unauthorised access to retailer accounts

Report Fraud is urging online shoppers to stay alert for unusual activity on their accounts following a rise in criminals gaining access to buy expensive goods.

Recent reporting highlights Argos as a key trend in this activity. Report Fraud has seen a significant increase in cases mentioning the retailer, reflecting how criminals are targeting well-known brands. Argos is actively working with authorities and its customers to identify suspicious activity and strengthen safeguards.

Criminals are using login details obtained from data breaches to gain unauthorised access to retailer accounts. This is possible due to the practice of reusing the same password across multiple online accounts. Once they have control of the account, criminals will place online orders and then collect the good in-person at a physical store. In some instances, the goods are paid for using payment details not connected to the victim of the compromised account.

These fraudulent orders are frequently fulfilled through ‘click and collect’, allowing offenders to retrieve goods in person.

In May, Report Fraud received 652 reports which mention Argos, a 323 per cent increase compared to April, when 154 reports mentioning the retailer were made. Since the start of 2026, there have been 1,175 reports mentioning the retailer, with May seeing the highest number to date.

Argos has been contacting customers who may have been affected and continues to work closely with partners and shoppers to help protect accounts and prevent further incidents.

Detective Chief Inspector Steven Kettle, Head of Crime Services at Report Fraud, said:

“Report Fraud urges anyone with online retail accounts to remain vigilant and be alert to any unusual or suspicious activity.

“It is essential to take appropriate steps to protect your accounts by following Report Fraud’s guidance. If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, please report it to Report Fraud via reportfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.”

How can you protect yourself?

All shoppers with any retailer should take measures to protect their online account. Here is what you can do:

- Reset passwords: if you noticed any unauthorised activity on an online account, you should change your password immediately. You should also do this for any accounts that use the same password. A good way to make sure your passwords are secure and strong is to combine 3 random words to create a unique password. You should opt for a passkey if you can.

- Enable 2SV: whenever available, protect your online accounts by enabling 2-step verification (2SV).

- Shopping online: if you decide to create an account for the store you’re buying from, don’t allow them to store your bank details for future purchases.

If you have been a victim of fraud, you should tell Report Fraud by reporting it on the website at reportfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. Or if you live in Scotland, call 101.

Child Safety Week – Simple Steps That Protect Young Lives.

Children are naturally curious and during Child Safety Week, we’re reminding parents and carers just how important home safety is when it comes to preventing burns and fires.

Simple changes can dramatically reduce risk, including:

- Keeping candles, matches and lighters out of reach

- Using back hobs and turning saucepan handles in

- Never leaving children unattended in the kitchen

- Installing fireguards around heaters and fireplaces

- Having working smoke alarms on every level of your home, check to make sure they beep

It’s also important to remember burn first aid:

❄️ Cool with cool running water for 20 minutes
📞 Call for help if needed
🩹 Cover with cling film or a clean dressing

Remember: Cool, Call, Cover!

For more tips on keeping your home safe, visit our website: https://humbersidefire.gov.uk/your-safety/safety-in-the-home-advice

You can also come and see us in person, our Prevention team will be joining colleagues from Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust at St Stephen’s Shopping Centre on 3 June, 10am to 1pm, sharing advice to help keep children safe.

🔵 My Community Alert - Humberside Police 🔵

Please read the attached on the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) 2Wheel Operation running from Tuesday 2nd June to Monday 15th June 2026.

The operation marks the start of the summer season for two-wheel road users and focuses on reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

We are supporting a national campaign aimed at improving safety for motorcyclists and cyclists across our region as part of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) 2Wheel Operation. 🏍️🚲

Running from Tuesday, 2 June to Monday, 15 June 2026, the operation marks the start of the summer season for two-wheel road users and focuses on reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

Motorcyclists remain disproportionately represented in road traffic collisions across the UK, highlighting their increased vulnerability compared to other road users.

Over the coming weeks and throughout the summer, our Roads Policing Unit will be engaging with motorcyclists and other vulnerable road users to promote safer riding behaviour, alongside carrying out engagement activity where appropriate. Read more about the operation: https://ow.ly/p1p650Z6CfI
