FVPF - Friends of the Victoria Playing Field - St Albans

FVPF - Friends of the Victoria Playing Field - St Albans A community group which aims to protect and enhance this green recreational space in the heart of St Albans.

FVPF is a group of volunteers who are dedicated to the upkeep, use and well being of Victoria Playing Field located between Verulam Road and Folley Lane in St Albans. Membership of the Friends of the Victoria Playing Field (FVPF) is free of charge and open to all local residents who use and enjoy the playing field on a regular basis. There is a small but dedicated committee, elected at the AGM, wh

ich coordinates liaison with the local councils and organises formal events such as the very successful Larks in the Parks. We recognise its importance in our lives and those of our neighbours, and strive to encourage its use and to improve it. At a time when much of our urban green space such as school playing fields are being used for housing and commercial development, and our lives are becoming more sedentary, the value of the Victoria Playing Field and parks like it to ourselves and future generations cannot be underestimated. FVPF objectives:
- bring together those who care about the Victoria Playing Field
- encourage thoughtful consideration of proposals made for the Field
- liaise with agencies which have an interest in, and a responsibility for the Field
- promote activities to transform good ideas for the Field into reality
- enable as many people as possible to enjoy this valued space
- encourage measures to achieve its care and maintenance, both in the short and long term

*Lost Keys and Stolen Amazon Parcels*

Keys found: Please call Tim on 07771811986 to retrieve them.

We would also like to point out that there have been a number of thefts locally of Amazon deliveries being taken from peoples doorsteps. Those considered low value have been abandoned in the VPF. Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the Police by calling 111.

Thank you,

The FVPF

*SAVE THE DATE - LARKS IN THE PARKS 10 JULY*

Would you be willing to volunteer for Larks this year? We need volunteers before and on the day to do anything from scouting for new stalls to setting up gazebos or selling cakes.
Larks is a community run, mainly free, event that relies solely on volunteers. So, if you would like to be involved please contact us at [email protected] or message us on here on Facebook.

*Celebrating St Albans Civic Society’s 60th Anniversary*

As part of its 60th birthday celebrations last year the Civic Society decided to help fund a range of community-based projects which met one or more of their charitable objectives. They identified the most relevant of them as “To encourage the preservation, development and improvement of the features that contribute to pleasing and convenient conditions in which to live” and made it clear that they would particularly welcome schemes which would improve our natural environment and increase the enjoyment of living in St Albans.

With that in mind, we decided to apply for help with our aim of tackling the winter flooding problems which have increasingly affected the children's play area and some adjacent sections of path and the playing field.

We had already made some scrapeaways to contain excess rainfall in the particularly boggy area near the Folly Lane entrance, built up the edges of the paths there to prevent water flowing onto adjacent areas of the field, and dug out a soakaway in the play area itself. These have all helped but much more is required and so we were absolutely delighted to hear that the Civic Society had awarded us a very generous grant of £1,000.

Together with an individual donation from a Friend
and local resident this has enabled us to plant three goat willow trees and a weeping willow which, over the next 10 to 20 years, will grow to form a climbing tree.

We have also installed a temporary fence around the weeping willow to protect it while it grows and will be planting a “hedge” of dog roses inside it to soften its appearance and to add colour and fragrance.

Details of all the Civic Society's 60th birthday awards together with information about membership, events and other local news can be found at www.stalbanscivicsociety.com

Hi everyone!
I’m glad I caused joy with the badminton net.😊
I do not expect thanks, appreciation, or anything in return. I didn't do it for that.
So.. why? Why am I doing this? Maybe it's better to not tell you.. Let it be a secret.🤫
Of course.. I had a lot of work, I spent time and money. But if it caused a happy moment, if I put a smile on a face.. then it worth. Because there is a smile that is worth anything.🌍
And I hope I can still take care of the badminton net. I hope I don't hurt anyone with this, I hope no one will forbid me to continue. This net is important to me, I want to keep it for as long as possible. ,,Forever..''
Even if sometimes it's not easy..
Unfortunately, I am very busy with my job. I can't see how they play with it. That's why I'm happy with that feedback, it means a lot to me. Thank you.
(Tim! If you, or anyone else want to contact me. Then I'm available on messenger. I have no reason to do so, but I want to remain anonymous. If I can help for ,,FVPF'' with anything, just contact me.)
All the best, and HAVE FUN!😏

PLAY AREA GATE UPDATE 22.10.2021

You will have noticed that the gate into the play area has been removed. We understand that SADC will replace it with one less likely to cause injury to children though we have not been informed of a timetable for this work.

Until this time, please:
- remind your children to take care when entering or leaving the play area
- keep an eye on children who might run out into the wider Playing Field without an adult to ensure their safety (the steps up to Folly Lane are very close and recently there has been a huge increase in the amount of traffic using this road)

Dog owners – please keep your dogs on a lead at all times and do not take them into the play area

We will update this notice as soon as we know when the new gate is to be installed.
