This summer continues to be very busy for us in terms of fires, as is the case for Services around the country.

However it is still important to maintain and develop our skills in the wide variety of other emergencies that we respond to. Therefore yesterday evening we performed a hazardous materials drill.

Our crew practiced a sn**ch rescue, which is the rapid rescue of a casualty who has been incapacitated by a hazardous material and is therefore unable to remove themselves from the risk area.

With sn**ch rescues we obviously have to be quick, but we also have to ensure we do it in a safe way so as to avoid harming ourselves.

We also practiced decontamination procedures, which are crucial to ensure we don’t spread the hazardous substance.

🚒Drill Night🚒

On Monday night the Marlborough crew attended a local live fire training exercise.

During which crews got to practice techniques in extinguishing fires and searching for casualties.

We would like to thank the local estate, building contractor and demolition company for their assistance in finding this venue for us to offer to the wider crews in Wiltshire.

On Saturday morning we were mobilised with crews from Westlea Fire Station and Swindon Fire Station along with a water carrier from Royal Wootton Bassett Fire Station and a light off road vehicle from Ludgershall Fire Station to a large stack of straw bales well alight.

On arrival we found that the fire had spread and was tearing through a nearby field and also threatening a row of trees near the bales. We quickly extinguished the fire in the field and then set about protecting the trees from further spread while addressing the burning bale stack itself.

Local farmers provided immediate assistance with their machinery, including cultivating fire breaks.

This came after a busy July for us where we received 39 mobilisations including Road Traffic Collisions, house fires, providing assistance to the Ambulance Service and a large number of outdoor fires.

We’re currently dealing with a fire a near Hackpen Hill affecting straw bales. Cyclists and walkers are asked to avoid the area.

We are currently dealing with a fire near Ogbourne St George.

Over the next couple hours, local residents may experience issues with their electricity due to damage to a nearby power line.

An engineer has been called and is on their way.

It’s been another busy week at Marlborough Fire Station with 12 mobilisations in the past 7 days.

Last Friday we responded to a house fire in Calne along with crews from Devizes and Chippenham and an Aerial Ladder Platform from Swindon.

On Tuesday Marlborough was one of a number of stations called to respond to another house fire, this time in Upavon.

On Wednesday Marlborough joined a number of crews in a response to a large field fire north of Swindon. Crews extinguished this fire with a combination of water and beaters, which are used to “stamp out” fires or patches of fire outdoors.

In addition to this we have responded to a number of incidents in and around Marlborough this week.

It’s been a busy July for DWFireRescue and this has been no different at Marlborough Fire Station, with 10 call outs in the past 5 days.

These mobilisations have included a house fire in Swindon and a large field fire near Hungerford.

We are at times required to attend incidents “across the border” and this was the case with the Hungerford incident as we worked with two neighbouring Fire & Rescue Services to bring the flames under control.

The combination of heat, wind and a lack of recent rain is a dangerous mix so we would like to advise members of the public to be cautious and vigilant.

Yesterday morning we attended a two vehicle RTC near Little Bedwyn.

The crew provided immediate emergency care to a casualty and made the scene safe.

Scene safety at RTCs typically involves assessing and addressing risk of involved vehicles catching fire, mitigating risk of harm to people from delayed deployment of vehicle safety systems such as airbags, assessing potential environmental damage from the involved vehicles, and traffic management.

This afternoon our crew were mobilised to a field fire near Yatesbury.

In warm weather field fires can spread particularly rapidly and dramatically but fortunately that wasn’t the case today.

Due to Marlborough being located both near a lot of countryside and near to Swindon we attend a number of rural as well as urban incidents.
