National Air and Space Camp - Day 6 🛫✈️🛩

Wow! The last few days at NASC have been a bit of a whirlwind but I've had the most amazing time. The NASC Industry Day on Thursday was a huge success with thousands of cadets and staff gathering at RAF Syerston.

There was so many stands to visit with over 90 industry partners coming along to run STEM activities and provide aerospace careers advice. My role for the day was to chat to the industry partners and keep them topped up with tea, coffee and biscuits and I had the most amazing time hearing about their experiences. They absolutely loved engaging with all of the air cadets!

The airshow was of course a highlight for everyone and it was wonderful to see the groups of cadets rushing outside everytime a new aircraft flew overhead. I was so busy enjoying the day that I forgot to take lots of photos and videos but I did manage to find all of the Dorset and Wiltshire Wing staff!

At the end of the day we had a NASC camp debrief and the cadets were still absolutely buzzing. A huge thank you to all the NASC staff for organising such a fantastic event!

National Air and Space Camp - Day 5 🤖👩‍💻👨‍💻🤖

I was very excited today at NASC as I had the opportunity to get involved with one of my favourite subjects ... STEM! To be more precise, one of the first RAFAC Bronze STEM courses.

The two day course introduced coding using the Lego Spike education kits and I was blown away by the possibilities and learning opportunities. The cadets very quickly became familiar with the software and flew through a series of increasingly difficult coding tasks. They aced it!

I also had great fun getting stuck in, playing around with the robots and helping the cadets build and debug their code. I learnt so much and really look forward to teaching the course in the near future.

With Silver and Gold STEM courses on the way, it was also wonderful to get an insight into the new progressive training syllabus. The cadets are going to love it and I can't wait to see it rolled out across Dorset and Wiltshire Wing.

National Air and Space Camp - Day 4 ✈️💻🤖

Today I've been incredibly lucky to get involved with two fantastic activities at National Air and Space Camp!

The morning started with an aerofoil/wing design competition run by staff from Raytheon and Collins Aerospace. Each team was given a budget alongside the requirements for structural loads, and they had to plan their design before ordering materials. The teams had a great time building prototypes and reinforcing their wings after performing their own tests. The customer applied the final load tests and although there was a little (or in some cases a lot) of bending, all the designs survived and the wings were accepted!

This afternoon I was really fortunate to get an introduction to the new RAFAC STEM progressive training syllabus. It looks incredibly exciting and I was blown away with the coding skills that the cadets developed in just one day. Look how well they did with the Lego robots! I can't wait to learn more and see some of the 2293 Squadron cadets gain their qualifications in the future.

✨ Join us for a first look at what your cadets will experience with 2293 Squadron

SATURDAY 19th SEPTEMBER 2026
TIME 10:00am- 2pm

🌟 Squadron Open Day – See What Your Cadets Will Experience!

We’re looking forward to welcoming new cadets and families to our Squadron Open Day — a chance to see exactly what your young people will be doing with us over the coming months.

The day will be led by our staff team and supported by many of our brilliant cadets from the last two intakes, who have progressed through these activities and are now helping to showcase what’s ahead for our newest recruits.

Families will be able to watch and learn about Leadership, First Aid, Wear & Care, Drill, Aviation, Fieldcraft, Radio and Shooting — all activities that our recent intakes have already enjoyed and excelled in.

This Open Day is designed to give new families a clear picture of what’s coming next, how training works, and the opportunities their cadets will have as they settle into squadron life.

To keep everything clear and consistent, all official information about the Open Day will be shared through the squadron’s communication channels, ensuring parents receive accurate details directly from the staff organising the event.

We can’t wait to welcome you and show you what your cadets will soon be part of. It’s an exciting time to join the squadron, and our current cadets are ready to show you why.

National Air and Space Camp - Day 3 🛩🛰🚀

Today has been another great day at National Air and Space Camp and I got to spend it with BAE Systems. They ran a fantastic 'Falcons Den' activity where the cadets had to work in teams to design a stealth reconnaissance drone that met a list of customers requirements, including cost and sustainability.

Each team member was assigned a role, from project manager to procurement manager and mechanical engineer to safety officer, before they came up with a conceptual drone design.

To test their skills, each team had a budget to buy materials and build a prototype, including additional costs for using tools and testing. The designs we so creative and really well thought through!

To add to the challenge, the cadets were also given a set of problem solving tasks to unlock a tin containing BAE merchandise. As you can imagine, the pin badges were very popular.

At the end of the day, each team pitched their designs back to BAE Systems to explain their process and key decisions. The posters were amazing and each team member shone whilst explaining their contributions. Thanks for a fantastic day everyone!

National Air and Space Camp - Day 1 and 2 🌌🚀🪐

Hi everyone. I'm CI Laurel and this week I'm taking over the Marlborough Squadron page to share my experiences at the National Air and Space Camp (NASC). Please keep an eye out for my posts and follow along!

Yesterday cadets and staff from Dorset & Wiltshire Wing joined the South West Region coach to travel to NASC. We had a great journey and quickly settled in on camp, meeting lots of new people from across RAFAC. Check out the amazing staff merchandise too!

Today was our first full day of activities and I had great fun at the National Space Centre in Leicester. After spending some time exploring the exhibits, we had a great workshop learning all about rockets. We even designed paper rockets in teams and gave them a test in a fun competition!

After lunch, I loved spending more time looking at the exhibits with the cadets (and finding a few dinosaurs on the way) before we watched the amazing planetarium show. At the end of the trip we also had a fantastic 'number off' with 95 cadets!

What a great hands on day! Everyone is now enjoying the evening relaxing back at Camp.

Rope Tying and Teamwork 🪢🪢🪢

It's always great to learn new skills and Flt Lt Parfitt is always coming up with fun new ways to teach our cadets how to tie a variety knots!

Working together in flights, the cadets were initially tasked to build the longest pole with just wooden poles and rope. The quality of the knots were then tested with an exciting inter-flight challenge.

Their teamwork was tested further with a stretcher building task. It was wonderful to see how well everyone worked together and how importantly every cadet took safety. Everyone fully trusted their team mates and took it in turns being lifted and carried.

The smiles and deep concentration just go to show how much fun everyone had!

Blue Drone (RPAS) Course

To continue on the flying theme, we wanted to share an exciting addition to the RAFAC progressive training syllabus, Blue RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems)!

We were delighted that several cadets from 2293 could join other squadrons in the wing for one of the first Dorset & Wiltshire courses. Our cadets completed their CAA DMARES theory to learn basic controls and safety awareness and after gaining their FlyerID, they undertook practical drone flying to gain experience and earn their blue badges. Everyone had a fantastic time trying something new.

A huge thank you to Dorset and Wiltshire Wing for the amazing photos. We can't wait to see more of our cadets achieve their Blue Aviation Badge and hopefully move on to Bronze, Silver and Gold levels in the future!
