A drought has been declared across Devon and Somerset, and surrounding areas 🚨

Hot, dry conditions mean a higher risk of wildfires and increased pressure on water supplies.

We’re reducing non-essential water use, reviewing firefighting water supplies, and ensuring our wildfire resources – including water bowsers, 4x4s, ATVs and drones – are ready to respond.

Help to protect each other, and our countryside and water supplies, by:

🔥 Avoiding campfires and disposable BBQs
🍖 Staying with BBQs and fire pits
🚬 Never dropping lit ci******es on dry ground
💧 Using water wisely

A quick round up of this week's incidents.

So far crews have been mobilised a further 9 times since Monday taking our total for July to 28 incidents in 26 days.

19/07/26 @ 21.08 Mobilised to a Fire Domestic in Street with our ISU to support crews already on scene.

22/07/26 @ 12.08 Mobilised to a Rescue of Small Animal in Norton Sub Hamdon.

22/07/26 @ 15.35 Mobilised to (unfortunately) a False Alarm Malicious in South Petherton.

23/07/26 @ 09.50 Mobilised to Stand by Duties at 73 Yeovil while they dealt with another incident.

24/07/26 @ 15.40 Mobilised to a Small Fire In The Open in South Petherton.

25/07/26 @ 08.54 Mobilised to a Small Vehicle Fire in South Petherton.

26/07/26 @ 00.16 Mobilised to a Large Fire In The Open at a scrap yard in Taunton with our ISU.
Crews were stood down from this incident as we were not required.

A further 2 call outs for us today after our late night mobilisation in the ISU to Taunton.

Firstly crews were mobilised at 12:54 to a "Fire In The Open" in Kingsdon alongside crews from Somerton Fire station, Somerton were on scene first and did an excellent job in extinguishing most of the fire before our arrival, once on scene Martock crews got to work extinguishing any hot spots and dampening down the surrounding area to prevent any further fire spread.

We then returned to station around 14:30.

Crews were not long back to our homes and we were again mobilised, this time at 15:09 as part of a "Make Pumps 10" Assistance Message that was received from the below incident.

Before Martock crews even arrived on scene a further Assistance Message of "Make Pumps 15" had been sent from the crews there😮.

Working extremely hard alongside crews from across the service and from neighbouring services we got to work extinguish the fire using Hosereel jets, beaters, and drag forks.

We returned to station around 21:00 and then set about a major clean of the appliance before we finally returned to our homes at 21:30😴.

Third call out of the day as our ISU has just mobilised at 21:57 to assist crews already on scene with Breathing Apparatus Operations at a Large Property fire in Taunton.

Long night ahead.

We have a large number of fire engines and specialist vehicles dealing with a house fire in Oake Close, Oake.

Avoid the area and close windows and doors if you live nearby.

Second mobilisation of the day, this time at 12:56 to a "Small Fire In The Open" near to Muchelney.

Once on scene Martock crews discovered one field approx 300m x 300m containing multiple hay bales well alight, the fire had also spread through the hedgerows and was spreading through two neighbouring fields.

It soon became apparent assistance would be needed so an "Assistance Message" of "Make Pumps 3 and Water Carriers 1" was sent.

These were sent from Somerton, Yeovil and Bridgwater Fire Stations.

Crews set to work extinguishing the fire using 2 x Hosereel Jets, 2 x Main Jets, Multiple Beaters and Drag Forks🥵🚒.

Fire spread in the first field was limited to approx 80%.

Fire spread in the two neighbouring fields was limited to a small area of approx 20m x 20m and 50% of unaffected hay bales were placed in an area of safety by the farmer.

Crews then handed the incident over to a "two pump relief strategy" who will continue to dampen down the affected area and monitor and extinguish any remaining hotspots, theses appliances attended from Glastonbury and Castle Cary Fire Stations.

Martock crews returned to station around 19:00 to clean off kit and the appliance ready for the next🔥.

Crews have been mobilised to a further 4 incident in the past 48hrs continuing our busy spell🚒.

Firstly crews were mobilised at 21:20 on Wednesday evening to a "Property Fire" in Yeovil (half way through the second half of the England game⚽️) thankfully this turned out to be a "False Alarm" and crews were shortly stood down from the incident and returned home in time to watch the last 15 minutes🤦.

Second call was at 05:15 on Thursday morning to "Assist other Agencies" in the South Petherton area, once on scene crews assisted the ambulance service with an incident and returned to station approx 30 minutes later.

The third mobilisation came later on Thursday this time at 21:00, crews were mobilised to the Long Sutton area as a relief crew to take over from crews already on scene at an ongoing incident, crews worked alongside other stations to dampen down any remaining hotspots before returning to station at 23:30.

Finally crews were mobilised this morning at 06:30 (second early start of the week) to a "Small Fire in the Open" near to Norton Sub-Hamdon, on arrival crews discovered a fire within the hedgerow, crews extinguished using 1 x HRJ and returned to station at 08:00.

No let up for our crews yesterday and through the night as we worked tirelessly to help extinguish an incident near to Chard.

Crews were firstly mobilised at 14.30 with our ISU to an Agricultural Building Fire where crews already on scene had sent a "Make Pumps 4 Assistance Message" to control confirming the building was full of hay and was well alight.

Once on scene Martock crews assisted with BA operations before returning to station around 17.00.

Then at 22.30 crews were again mobilised to the same incident, this time in our Fire Appliance as part of a relief strategy to take over from the crews still on scene.

Martock crews worked throughout the night, monitoring the incident and extinguishing any hot spots, limiting any further fire spread before handing the incident over to oncoming relief crews at 06.30

We returned to station at 07.00 just in time for some of us to head off to our primary employment🥵😴🚒.
