Maryport’s Cheer Force Knights are British and World Champions!

Maryport’s Cheer Force Knights cheerleading team are celebrating once again with both the Lady Royals and Miss Empire cheerleading teams, featuring a large number of our very own Netherhall School students, being crowned Gold Jamfest Europe British National Champions over two days of competition held at the Manchester Central Convention Complex over the weekend of Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June.

This outstanding achievement follows the Lady Royals being crowned World Champions at The Allstar World International Cheer Competition held in Orlando, Florida, USA on Friday 17th April and cements a season that will be remembered by the Cheer Force Knights for years to come.

When I spoke to the girls following their latest triumph, they told me how proud they were of their achievements and how they believe that all of the hard work they have put in is really paying off. The girls were keen to once again thank their superb coaches Olivia Scholey, Evie Sloan, Ellie Dempster and Holly Percival for all their dedication and also thanked their parents who have played a crucial role in supporting the girls to success.

All of our outstanding students should be incredibly proud of their fantastic achievements, they once again prove themselves to be fantastic ambassadors for Netherhall School and the town of Maryport and are inspirational role models to their peers. Congratulations once again, girls!

Year 9 Star Student Athena P – Cumbria Athletic Association Championship 2026 Triple Medallist

Congratulations to year 9 star student Athena P who is celebrating a haul of 3 medals at the recent Cumbria Athletic Association Championship held at Carlisle’s Sheepmount Stadium on Saturday, 9th May.

Competing in the U16 category despite still being only 13 years old, Athena found herself competing against 15-year-olds, and despite this she secured the silver medal in the U16 3kg shot put event, recording a distance of 7.76m. Athena also secured two further bronze medals on the day, in the U16 3kg hammer event with a distance of 29.11m and in the U16 1kg discuss event, recording a distance of 20.86m.

When I spoke to Athena following her magnificent performance at the Cumbria Athletic Association Championship, she told me how proud she was to have secured three medals, with all three of her recorded distances being close to her personal best in each event. Athena told me how she felt very satisfied with her performances throughout the day and that she now aims for even greater success in next year’s championship, as she will be in an even better position to improve her performances further with another year’s experience.

Athena also told me how much she has enjoyed her time at Netherhall School and that her favourite subjects are PE, music and food technology. Athena is looking forward to beginning her GCSEs in September and intends to stay with us to complete her A levels before potentially continuing her studies at university level. Athena is a great inspiration to her peers here at Netherhall School who admire her commitment to both her studies and her extracurricular interests. Athena told me how grateful she is to her coach Mr Paul Holliday at the Copeland Athletic Club for his excellent advice and also asked me to thank her parents, Nina and Sergio for their fantastic support with both her academic studies and with her sporting career.

I am sure you will join me once again in congratulating Athena on a fantastic achievement in securing three medals at this year’s Cumbria Athletic Association Championship and for demonstrating the commitment to excellence that makes her a terrific role model to her peers and a first-class ambassador for our school. Congratulations and well done, Athena!

A huge congratulations to 7 Netherhall students who proudly represented the school at the Cumbria Schools County Championships on Saturday 6th June.

From Year 8- Luke competed in the 100m, Holly in the 300m, Iyla in the long jump, and Bobby in both the 1500m and high jump. All students held their own and put out fantastic performances , competing against mostly Year 9 athletes.

Hunter B (Year 9) achieved an excellent 3rd place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:21, while Morgan (Year 10) recorded a strong discus throw of 21.04m.

Special congratulations go to Athena (Year 9), who competed in both the discus and hammer events. Athena secured 2nd place in the hammer with an impressive throw of 27.45m, qualifying for the Northern Inter Counties Final at Hexham. She then went on to achieve an outstanding 3rd place finish at the Northern Inter Counties Final.

We are incredibly proud of all our athletes for their hard work, determination, and sportsmanship.

Year 7 Star Student Archie O - Carlisle Glass Longhorn Youth Football League Cup Champion 2026

Congratulations to year 7 star student Archie O, who has been crowned U13 Carlisle Glass Longhorn Youth Football League Cup champion with his Pirelli FC U13 team, following a superb 3-1 victory over Northbank FC at Carlisle United’s Brunton Park Stadium on Saturday, 23rd May.

Archie, who plays at centre back, has played for Pirelli FC for the last 2 years and his achievement is made even more impressive by the fact that he plays up a year with the U13 team, which he will continue to do next season as he moves into the U14 squad.

When I spoke to Archie following his fantastic achievement, he told me how proud he was to lift the trophy at Brunton Park and that he was already looking forward to next season. Archie is also looking forward to continuing to represent the school team, as he captained our excellent year 7 team to the semi final of the Cumbria County Cup this season, and he told me how he hopes to help the boys lift the trophy in year 8 next season. Archie also told me how much he has enjoyed his time at Netherhall School so far having joined us from Richmond Hill Junior School in Aspatria last September, with his favourite lessons being PE and English and his future ambition being to pursue a sports-based career.

Archie is a highly impressive young man who has made a big impression on everyone at Netherhall School this year with his excellent manners, his fantastic spirit and his desire to always give of his best. When interviewing Archie ahead of this Facebook post, he asked me to thank his coach at Pirelli U13s Mr Carl Judge, who has provided great advice and motivation throughout the season, and he also asked me to thank his parents Briony and Dale for all of their support too, both with his academic work and with his football career.

I would like to close by congratulating Archie and the Pirelli U13 team for a fantastic achievement in securing the title of Carlisle Glass Longhorn Youth League Cup champions for 2025-26 and to wish him well for the 2026-27 season, where we hope Archie is able to meet with yet more success, both with Pirelli FC and with our excellent Netherhall School football team. Congratulations, Archie and keep up the brilliant work!

Year 9 Star Student Jenson S Signs Contract Extension with Carlisle United Academy

Huge congratulations to year 9 star student Jenson S who has signed a two year contract extension with the Carlisle United Academy, taking Jenson through to the end of year 11 when he will find out if he will be taken on as an apprentice professional footballer with the Brunton Park club.

Jenson signed for the Carlisle United Academy in 2020 when he was 9 years old and has loved his time there, and when I spoke to him this week following the excellent news of his contract extension, he told me he was absolutely thrilled to be able to continue his academy journey until the age of 16. Jenson, who plays at centre back, told me he has played against some incredible teams during his time at the academy and created memories that will last a lifetime, most notably coming up against Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle United, Sunderland, Celtic and Hibernian, with Carlisle United’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool at the Merseyside club’s Melwood training ground in March being Jenson’s favourite moment with the blues, so far!

When I caught up with Jenson this week, he told me how he has enjoyed his time with us at Netherhall School over the last 3 years and that he is really enjoying all of his subjects, particularly PE and history, while he also told me how proud he is to captain the school’s U14 football team. Jenson was also quick to express how grateful he is to his coaches at the Carlisle United Academy, Mr Danny Grainger and Mr Olivier Bernard for their excellent tuition, and he was particularly keen to pay tribute to his parents Kayleigh and Darren for all the support they give him, both with his academic and his football career, as his parents are always on hand to take him to training and fixtures.

I am sure you will join me in congratulating this fantastic young man for a superb achievement in being offered a 2 year contract extension with the Carlisle United Academy which will take Jenson to the threshold of a professional football career. Jenson is yet another terrific role model and ambassador for the students of Netherhall School, who combines outstanding manners with the desire and commitment to always give of his best, both in his academic career and in his sporting endeavours. Jenson is a credit to his family, his school and to the town of Maryport and I am sure he will go on to many outstanding achievements in the years ahead. Very well done, Jenson and keep up the brilliant work!

The West Cumbria Dyslexia Association is hosting an Open Day on Saturday 4th July 2026, from 10am–12pm, at The Presbytery, Kirkby Street, Maryport, CA15 6EX.

This event is designed for parents/carers and children who would like to learn more about dyslexia, explore practical resources, or simply speak with experienced volunteers in a friendly, supportive environment.

Families attending will have the opportunity to:

• Talk to our trained support team about dyslexia and related learning needs
• Explore a range of resources and activities
• Ask questions in an informal, welcoming setting
• Find out more about our Saturday support hubs

Our Saturday hub has sessions running from 09:30 - 10:30 and 11:00 - 12:00 where the child/student will receive 1:1 support with a qualified teacher, 1:1 support with a qualified TA and the chance to meet and spend time with others also experiencing some difficulties in their education.

We would be extremely grateful if you could share this invitation with your school community—either via your newsletter, parent mailing list, or noticeboard. Our aim is to ensure that families who may benefit from additional guidance or reassurance know that support is available locally.

The police have given us information about a WhatsApp group that many children in West Cumbria have joined called “100 before 2027”.

We would strongly urge all parents and carers to check their child’s phone to ensure they are not accessing or participating in this discussion and if necessary block the group.

Currently there is very little known about this chat, however it is known to encourage self harm and su***de. Police have been made aware of this through a Facebook post from a concerned parent.

If your child has joined the group or if you have any information about this group, please report this directly to the police.

Please contact your child’s Head of Year or the school’s safeguarding team if you are concerned about your child’s wellbeing.
