We're sharing this warning from another Derbyshire council, which has been made aware of individuals posing as licensing officers in an attempt to collect alleged licensing fee debts from licensed premises. Don't fall for this scam...

The Council has been made aware of individuals posing as licensing officers in an attempt to collect alleged licensing fee debts from licensed premises.

We want to reassure all businesses that the Council will always issue a formal invoice directly to the premises for any licensing payment due, and all payments must only be made using the official payment details printed on the back of that invoice.

Did you know that churchyards and burial grounds have unique wildlife niches due to having relatively unchanged management over long periods of time?

The separation of consecrated land and unconsecrated land means that the grassland habitat within churchyards mostly escaped the changes in land that impacted the surrounding landscape. While other areas were subject to ploughing, fertilisers, and pesticides, the ecology within churchyards can remain relatively unchanged.

These sites can be oases for wildlife in both built up urban areas and agricultural areas.

Some interesting wildlife facts about churchyards:
• The British Lichen Society states that of the approximately 2,000 British lichen species, over a third are found in churchyards. In fact, in some parts of the country, there are species of lichen which are found exclusively in churchyards
• A recent survey from Bats in Churches revealed that half of all Church of England churches are home to bats. In older churches that rises to nearly eight in ten!

From the 6th to the 14th of June, it is Love your Burial Ground week, Churches Count on Nature AND National Cemeteries Week!

The independent, non-religious charity Caring for God’s Acre hosts the Churches Count on Nature and has more information on this and gives advice on improving burial grounds for nature:

Councillor Jo Linthwaite is Derbyshire Dales District Council's Civic Chair for the coming year.

The Matlock East & Tansley ward member takes over from Councillor David Chapman, becoming the 53rd Civic Chair in the Council’s history.

She will wear the ceremonial chain at official engagements in 2026/27, representing the Council at more than 50 functions throughout the year and organising special fund-raising events for charity.

Councillor Linthwaite has nominated two charities for the coming year:
👉Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre in Skegness
👉Just for Dogs, based in Brailsford, which rehomes abandoned, neglected and homeless dogs.

Paying tribute to Councillor Chapman, Councillor Linthwaite told the annual general meeting of the District Council: “Councillor Chapman has ably represented the residents of Hartington and Taddington for 25 years. For the last two years he has also represented residents of the Dales in his roles as Deputy Chair and Civic Chair.

“David has always done so with compassion, diligence and expertise. He may sometimes appear to be a man of few words but, when he does speak, he is always worth listening to.”

Councillor Linthwaite added: “Turning to the coming year: Three years ago, to my complete surprise, I was elected to this Council by the people of Matlock East and Tansley. At the count, I was flabbergasted to see everyone striding to the microphone clasping their acceptance speeches. I had none. I am better prepared today. Three years ago, I could never have envisaged myself being in this position either. Thank you all for your kind support.

“As Deputy Chair, I was fortunate to meet the previous Chair of High Peak Borough Council. He flung himself out of a plane and ran a marathon to raise money for his charities. I shall not be following in his footsteps! However, I do plan a sponsored walk. What better walk for someone with a poor head for heights than Giddy Edge? Perhaps some of you would like to join me?!

“Thank you again for this honour and I look forward to serving the Dales communities in the year ahead.”

Councillor Peter O’Brien was elected Deputy Civic Chair for the coming year.

Councillor Steve Flitter was re-elected as Leader of the Progressive Alliance administration of Liberal Democrat, Labour and Green councillors. Joint Deputy Leaders are Councillors Neil Buttle and Simon Ripton, who takes over from Councillor Bob Butcher as Labour group Leader.

Councillor Roger Shelley continues as Chair of the District Council, with Councillor Lucy Peacock re-elected as Deputy Chair.

In Volunteer Week we acknowledge the huge contribution of volunteers to the fantastic partnership Matlock Hurst Farm - Wild Works project...

This week is National Volunteer week and while we appreciate the work our volunteers do every day we wanted to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you for all they do - some of our volunteers have been with us from the beginning and some are recent additions but without them, the garden wouldn't be here.

To say a massive thank you, we are hosting a Volunteer Celebration, and we would love to see you there!

📅 When: Monday 22nd June, 2:30-4:00
📍 Where: The Farmer's Community Garden
⏰ How it works: Entirely drop-in! Stay for the whole session or just pop by.
🍰 What’s on the menu? Plenty of tea, coffee, and delicious cake.
🪓 A relaxed making session - try your hand at some woodcrafting or just enjoy the garden atmosphere.
💬 A chance to catch up with old friends, meet fellow volunteers, and celebrate everything we've built together.

No need to book, just turn up. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Our work is made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund , with thanks to National Lottery players. Working in partnership with Derbyshire Dales and Friends of Hurst Farm .
