Scotland was once divided by clans, loyalties, and ancient borders that shaped generations.

This old map reveals a Scotland many descendants today would barely recognize — a land of Highland routes, island strongholds, and forgotten territories long before modern borders existed.

How many of your family names were tied to these lands?

Comment your Scottish surname below. 🏴

I love maps of Scotland ♥️

This is The Kingdome of Scotland by John Speed, engraved by Jodocus Hondius in 1610, published in Speed's landmark atlas The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine (1611–1612). It was the first map of Scotland published in an English atlas. The original first-state edition featured portraits of King James VI & I, Queen Anne, and their sons Henry and Charles in the side panels; these were later replaced with depictions of Scottish and Highland figures following the ex*****on of Charles I in 1649.

You can find thousands of maps in our National Library of Scotland.
