A Solo Theatre Performance about Tracing Roots and Finding Home (performed in English; 2 hours including performance & discussion)
presented by Chan's Applied Theatre Lab
co-organised by New Art Exchange, HKBNO East Midlands Councilsg Kong Notts CIC.

Experience a heartfelt, personal story of migration and self-discovery as Yuk-Lan Chan brings to life this solo performance. Set between Hong Kong and the UK, this intimate performance shares Chan’s experiences of the struggles and discoveries that come with starting anew.
Leaving behind the politically charged landscape of Hong Kong, Chan navigates life in Britain, all while grappling with the legacy of her late father, Old Bean, whose presence lingers in memory and tradition. (Old Bean, 老豆, is an affectionate term
HongKongers use for their fathers.) With evocative storytelling, Chan weaves together narratives of displacement, adaptation and the small moments that shape our sense of identity and belonging.
Whether you have lived the immigrant journey or are simply drawn to stories of resilience and identity, this performance invites you into a world of reflection, connections and the search for the meaning of home.
Currently on tour across the UK, the show has previously toured to Taiwan and Vancouver.

We’re collaborating with New Art Exchange to host a special Community Kitchen on the first Thursday of April.

🕔 Dinner served at 5pm
on the 2nd of April 2026 Thursday

After dinner, stay for a screening of “Ten Years” (2015) at 6:00 PM. The film features five short stories set in 2025, imagining a future Hong Kong facing shrinking human rights, and increasing political control by China.

A new online tool is now available to help people across the East Midlands find English language classes.

Learning English in the East Midlands (LEEM) is a free, searchable website that brings together ESOL classes from across the region in one place. It can help you find English courses near you and learn more about the support available.

The Home Office has announced the expansion of BN(O) visa route.

Adult children of British National (Overseas) status holders who were under 18 at the time of Hong Kong’s 1997 handover to China will now be eligible to apply for the route independently of their parents.

Their partners and children will also be able to move to the UK under the expanded route.

It is estimated 26,000 people will arrive in the UK over the next 5 years.
