🚌 ICYMI: This week the Prime Minister announced that people with disabilities will now be able to use their bus passes ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. Disabilities don’t have a daily start and end time, and neither should the support those with disabilities rely on.

This move will directly impact the lives of THOUSANDS across Melton and Syston, bringing the cost of living down for people who face the extra price tag of disability, whilst helping those who need it most to access employment, education and training 🌹

Labour is cracking down on the spread of gambling and v**e shops in our town centres 🌹

Today, the government has announced plans to reign in the spread of unwanted shops on our high streets. What does this mean?

🚫 Councils will be given new powers to veto v**e and gambling shops
🚭 Shops won't be allowed to sell v**es near schools
🛍️ V**e shops will no longer be able to front as grocery shops
💰 The end of the outdated "Aim to Permit" policy which forced Councils to let gambling shops onto our high streets

ICYMI: Andy Burnham’s education reforms are about giving young people earlier access to skills, technical education and work experience.

We are thrilled that local residents will soon be able to see work starting on the replacement bridge at the Country Park, after it was so badly damaged in January 2025. Lots of people have been asking why it’s taken so long, so here’s the backstory:

💷 February/March 2025: work was undertaken to ensure the budget for the upcoming council year included funding for the bridge replacement that was so clearly needed and wanted. The Insurance company had made it clear that they would only fund a like for like replacement. But the Labour-Independent cabinet at the time felt improvements were vital to future proof the new bridge for generations to come. Additional funding was found, including “section 106” money which comes from developers.
✍️16th July 2025: Cabinet formally decided to replace the country park bridge.
👩‍⚖️ 24th July 2025: Full Council approved the Cabinet recommendation to reinstate the country park bridge with improvements.
✍️ August 2025: Decision taken by senior MBC staff on the instruction of the Cabinet, to award the contract for works to a local company.
🤝 August 2025 until Spring 2026: Coordination with partners including insurers, contractors, structural survey engineers, designers and importantly, the Environmental Agency to submit a fit for purpose permit application.
🏢 Spring 2026: Formal permit granted by the EA and the council - now under the new administration - were able to proceed.
🦺 July 2026: Following all the legal and financial processes, work will finally begin this month!

We fully support Conservative leader, Deborah Taylor, in all her recent efforts to highlight the behaviour of Reform councillors at Leicestershire County Council that is not acceptable, and comes at great cost to local tax payers. It’s disappointing now then, to see that the standards of some Conservative councillors at LCC (including hers), have not been what we should expect either. Councillors are elected and paid to do a job. “Supporting England”, whilst worthy, should never take priority over our residents’ needs - particularly, when those residents include children with SEND and their families.
