💡 Did you know… a bicycle can help tackle climate change, improve health, reduce congestion AND boost access to education - all at the same time?

This World Bicycle Day, we're celebrating one of the world's most powerful inventions: the bicycle.

Here are a few reasons why...
🚲 The bicycle has been around for more than 200 years and remains one of the most affordable, reliable and environmentally friendly forms of transport.
🚲 According to the World Health Organisation, regular physical activity such as cycling can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain cancers and premature death.
🚲 Cycling isn't just good for our health – it's good for our communities. More people choosing active travel means cleaner air, less congestion and safer streets.
🚲 For many people, walking and cycling provide affordable access to education, healthcare and employment opportunities.
🚲 The United Nations recognises cycling as an important tool in tackling climate change and creating more sustainable, inclusive communities.

That's why Middlesbrough Environment City's Active Travel Team is passionate about helping young people gain the skills and confidence to cycle safely through Bikeability training.

🚴 Our qualified instructors work with schools across Teesside teaching children:
✔️ How to carry out essential bike safety checks
✔️ Road awareness and communication skills
✔️ Safe riding positions and techniques
✔️ The confidence to cycle safely for life

By helping more children choose active travel, we're supporting healthier lifestyles and a greener future for our communities. 💚

🎬 We’re excited to share that Middlesbrough Environment City will feature in a major new BBC One documentary with Sir Gareth Southgate.

Gareth – the former England and Middlesbrough FC manager – visited our Acklam site as part of filming for 'Gareth Southgate: Changing The Game for Young Men'. The documentary will air on BBC One at 9pm on 8 June.

He spent time with volunteers, hearing their stories and learning more about how community-led volunteering can help people build confidence, develop skills and find a sense of purpose and belonging.

The documentary explores some of the challenges facing young men across the UK and highlights the importance of positive role models, connection and opportunity. These are themes that resonate strongly with the work we see every day through our volunteers and community members.

It was a real privilege to welcome Gareth to our site and showcase the incredible impact of volunteering in Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley. We’re proud that the stories, experiences and achievements of our local communities will be shared with a national audience, helping shine a spotlight on the vital role community organisations and volunteers play in supporting people to thrive. 💚

This (1-7 June 2026), we’re saying a very big THANK YOU to the incredible volunteers who make our work possible. 🙏

Volunteers are at the heart of charities across the country, giving their time, skills and energy to support communities every day. Without their invaluable contributions, many organisations simply wouldn’t be able to provide the essential services people rely on.

Here at Middlesbrough Environment City, our volunteers help us deliver vital services across the Tees Valley - from tackling food insecurity and affordable energy advice, to sustainable growing, active travel and climate action.

Our volunteers give so much to our organisation, and without them we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

THANK YOU to each and every one of you for the difference you make every day. 💚

From supporting healthy diets to feeding communities across continents, potatoes are so much more than a side dish. 💚

✨ What a fantastic time was had at our ENCHANTED ACADEMY event held at Middlesbrough Environment City HQ today! ✨

Children from across Teesside joined us for a day full of Harry Potter-inspired creativity, learning and outdoor fun as part of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme. ⚡🪄

The day brought together imaginative activities with hands-on experiences that encouraged children to get active, try something new and learn more about healthy lifestyles. 🌱

We started with a walk in nature to get our steps in for the day before sitting down together to enjoy a healthy and nutritious lunch. Our young witches and wizards then took part in a 'Herbology' class, discovering the magic of herbs, plants and growing your own food. The day was rounded off by getting wonderfully messy making soda bread. 🥖

It was lovely to see so many children building confidence, making new friends, exploring nature and developing new skills in such a positive and supportive environment. Alongside all the fun, there were plenty of opportunities to learn more about cooking, nature and healthy living. 💚

Funded through the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, these FREE sessions are designed for children and young people eligible for benefits-related free school meals - giving them the chance to stay active, make friends, learn new skills and enjoy healthy meals during the holidays.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the day such a success. We loved seeing so many smiling faces and children fully engaged in the activities throughout the session. ☺️

Keep an eye on our website and social media channels for more exciting HAF activities and events coming during the summer holidays. ☀️

🌞 With temperatures rising and many areas experiencing prolonged dry spells, gardens, allotments and green spaces can quickly come under stress in hot weather.

While sunny days are welcome, extreme heat can damage plants, dry out soil and make life harder for wildlife too.

To help your garden stay healthy through the heat, here are 5 simple tips recommended by our horticultural experts:

💧 Water deeply in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation
🌱 Add mulch around plants to help soil retain moisture
🪴 Prioritise pots, vegetables and young plants, which dry out fastest
✂️ Avoid digging, planting or heavy pruning during very hot days
🐝 Leave shallow water dishes out for birds, bees and hedgehogs

Follow these simple actions to make a big difference for both plants and wildlife during hot weather. 🌼

The news this week that the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran means that energy prices will rise by around 13% from July will be worrying for many households.

Regulator Ofgem says the impact on wholesale prices means a household using a typical amount of gas and electricity will pay £221 more a year, with an annual bill of £1,862. This will affect millions of homes on variable tariffs.

For families already feeling the pressure of rising living costs, the thought of paying even more for gas and electricity can feel overwhelming. Although we’re heading into summer, now is a good time to review your energy bills, understand what support may be available and prepare ahead of the colder months.

Here are a few things that can help:
💡 Review your current energy tariff and consider whether fixing prices is right for you
📞 Speak to your supplier early if you’re worried about keeping up with payments
📋 Check whether you may qualify for grants, discounts or support schemes
⚡ Make small changes at home to reduce electricity use and lower bills over time
🤝 Ask for advice early before things become harder to manage

At Middlesbrough Environment City, our Affordable Warmth Team supports people across the community who are struggling with energy costs or fuel poverty. We offer free, impartial energy advice, help with bills and information about grants and schemes that may help you stay warm and well at home. 💚

☀️ With temperatures rising across the UK, many households are looking for ways to stay cool without driving up energy bills. Small changes around the home can make a big difference in keeping rooms comfortable during hot weather.

Here are our top 5 energy saving tips for keeping your home cool in hot weather:

🪟 Open windows early morning or overnight - then close them before the hottest part of the day.
🕶️ Keep blinds and curtains shut in sunny rooms to block out heat.
💡 Switch off lights and appliances you’re not using - they all generate extra warmth.
🌀 Use fans wisely - they cost less to run than air conditioning.
🍳 Try to avoid using ovens during peak heat and opt for lighter meals where possible.

Don't forget to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity in hours of peak heat and look out for each other.

If you’re worried about energy costs this summer, our Affordable Warmth Team is here to help. Get in touch for free advice and support with managing your energy bills. Call 01642 579820 or (freephone) 0800 304 7084, or email [email protected] 💚
