Heron Corn Mill is located in Beetham, halfway between Lancaster and Kendal, next to the River Bela. The mill is important due to its national significance (being a grade II* listed, intact, and operational 18th century corn mill with rare features) but also because of the way it combines traditional and contemporary technology to operate sustainably. The mill - managed b

y a registered charity - is self-sufficient due to a 100kW hydropower turbine installed in 2010 which provides green energy for the buildings and any surplus is sold to local industry which brings in an income. The turbine was designed to work in sync with the old sluice gate and launder which serve the supply to the original 14ft water wheel which still powers the milling machinery today. Recent refurbishment has enabled major essential repairs and restoration of the unique mill to take place, including the ancient grinding machinery which dates back to 1740. This project is testimony to the growing trend of mill restoration, with the Government recently backing such initiatives in its push for green power and renewable energy generation. Visitors now have improved access and new interpretation - including a unique and colourful downloadable hydro game, a visitor app and a live feed from the hydro which shows the energy and equivalent income generated. They can explore the three-storey corn mill, see the water power connection of the old and the new, meet Stuart the miller, join guided tours with our enthusiastic volunteers, and watch the millstones turn to grind grains. Heron Corn Mill is truly a hidden gem, and helps contribute to a healthy and socially-active community. Kate Fox is a stand-up poet, spoken word artist and broadcaster. She is a regular contributor to Radio 4's spoken word cabaret “The Verb”, has made two comedy series for Radio 4, been Poet in Residence for the Glastonbury Festival and the Great North Run and completed a PhD in stand-up comedy. She is the author of “Where There’s Muck There’s Bras: True Stories of the North of England’s Women” published by Harper North, and poetry collections including “On Sycamore Gap” (Harper North, 2024), “Bigger On the Inside” (Smokestack Books, 2024) and “The Oscillations” (Nine Arches Press, 2021).

Our Heritage Open Day is coming up! ( 12th September ) Iain will be giving free tours of the mill, timed storytelling sessions - come and hear local folktales told in the Grain Store with Simon Sylvester. Our Millwright Stuart and trainee Steve will be demonstrating traditional cog-making for the mill, other rural crafts and activities on site for the whole family. Stomping Ground will be here with campfire goodies, Meet Annie and Lottie on their walkabout, with their much-talked-about spectacular scientific discovery machine! There's art and books in the barn, with food stalls and fresh bread - unmissable - bring the whole family!

Looking for somewhere to take the family on this dark wet day? The mill has free tours from 11am, plenty of parking space. We have the warm barn with kids activities, snack bar and plenty of oats, wheat and spelt flour on sale. Take the strain off! There's also the award-winning Wheatsheaf at Beetham close by!
