Happy AHPs Day!

As the third largest clinical workforce in health and care, Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) and AHP Support Workers play a vital role in supporting patients and helping to deliver high-quality care across our hospital.

Today, we shine a light on all our AHPs at MKUH, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiographers, dietitians, speech and language therapists, orthoptists, operating department practitioners and orthotists. Through your expertise and dedication, you make a real difference to the lives of patients, families and colleagues.

Our hospital is currently very busy, and demand for beds is soaring. Relatives and carers can play an important role in helping patients leave hospital safely and on time when they are medically ready for discharge.

When patients are well enough to leave the hospital, their discharge can sometimes be delayed if the right arrangements aren’t in place at home.

If you’re a relative or carer of a patient who is ready to leave hospital, you can help our discharge team by preparing for a return home:

✅Arrange transport
✅Collect any prescribed medication
✅Ensure someone is there to welcome them back
✅Stock up on food, fluids, and essentials
✅Bring clothes for travelling home
✅Provide key access if no one can be at home
✅Your support makes a big difference to your loved one and helps us free up beds for patients who urgently need hospital care.

High numbers of patients are arriving at our Emergency Department who could receive the care they need from another NHS service.

Our team is assessing everyone thoroughly and signposting those with minor illnesses and injuries, who can safely be treated elsewhere, to the Urgent Care Service or their local pharmacy.

If you have a minor illness or injury, it is likely that you will be waiting longer than usual to be seen because we have to prioritise people who have serious and life-threatening medical needs.

Please give careful consideration to the full range of options available to you and use NHS 111 for guidance on the right service.
