Today, on Firefighters’ Memorial Day, we honour our firefighting family - past and present - and colleagues around the world for their courage, dedication and service.

We also remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The date May 4th chosen for International Firefighters’ Day, was linked to the feast day of St Florian (the patron saint of all firefighters). St Florian was the first known commander of one firefighting squad in the Roman Empire. He lost his life, as well as those of his colleagues, for protecting the same humane ideas which firefighters all over the world share even today.

Firefighters in most of the European countries celebrate their day on 4th of May as a ‘Day of Fire Service’ as well as St. Florian’s Day. This date is also known as St Florian’s Day worldwide and has been tradition for more than 150 years in Europe

Sad week at Minehead this week 😢

After 22 years we said farewell to James Guscott.

James suffered a stroke in March 2024 which has sadly left him unable to continue with operational activities despite almost 2 years of recovery.

James is a very respected member of the crew whose commitment and dedication was second to none and he will be greatly missed.

What makes this even more sad, is that James had not long prior to the stroke, embarked on his career progression as a Watch Manager, and was the next generation of leadership at the station.

The station presented James with an Axe and various framed gifts to mark his time at Minehead.
James served from 2003-2026.

Thanks for your dedication and service James and we wish him and his family all the best for the future. 🫶

Whilst this was a sad evening, there were two new positive milestones.
Over the last few months we have welcomed two new recruit Firefighters to the team.

We welcome Finlay and Reuben to the team.
What makes this a little more special, is that Fin and Reu are brothers.
Not the first time Minehead has had brothers on the team, but something that doesn’t happen very often.
Welcome on board guys 🫡

🚨🚒2025 Round up🚒🚨

Now the Internet has quietened down a little, it’s a good opportunity to round up the station activities for 2025.

Overall, Minehead crews were mobilised on 281 occasions.

December stats included:
🔔Fire alarms 12
🚑Assist ambulance 3
🚗RTCs 2
🪾Fires in the open 1
🚒Standby duties 1
⚒️Gain Entry medical 1
🚜🚙Vehicle fires 2
🏚️Domestic fires 1

2025 proved to be a challenge for many reasons with a wide variety of incident types.

The summer brought a large volume of fires in the open, with Bank Holiday August being particularly busy, especially with the Washford and North Hill incidents.

The significant Fire in Withycombe affecting multiple properties.

The tragic Road Traffic Collision involving the school coach near Wheddon Cross was particularly challenging, and plunged the community into difficult times, but demonstrated an overwhelming collective sense of support, both locally and from across the UK.

Whilst Incidents such as this are extremely rare, for some, the impact can often last for a lifetime, whether they are the children, teachers, families, passers by who helped or responders from across all the agencies involved.

Our thoughts still remain with everyone affected by the tragic incident of 17th July 2025🫶

On closing out 2025, all of the crew at Minehead Fire Station wish all our followers a safe 2026

Whilst the Firefighters themselves commit to often relentless disturbances from their primary employment and family time, we also need to recognise the support of those around us.
Without the support of Firefighter families and primary employers, we could not offer the response levels we do.
A massive ‘thank you’ to you all. ☺️❤️

We are still recruiting New Firefighters, so please go to our website dsfire.gov.uk and visit the working for us section as ‘on call’.

This month has been the month of the ‘Tash’ 👨‍🦰- Movember.

This year, six of the firefighters at 66 Minehead have given it a good old go!

Movember is about raising awareness around men’s health and sparking conversations about issues that sadly take the lives of men every year.
This includes focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and su***de prevention.

As with many men, Firefighters have their fill of these and are increasingly talking about it.

Talking is a powerful medicine.🩺🗣️

Talking gets you booking that prostate examination early🏥, checking those ‘sensitive areas 🤹’, and thinking about lifestyle choices and health. 🥗

Talking gets us opening up, confronting what haunts us, confronting what hides in us and learning how to deal with things.

Talking might be the difference between life and death.🙏

Don’t delay, do it today. Check yourself and check on your mates.🫡

85 years ago tommorow, a crew from Minehead’s Auxiliary Fire Service, were mobilised to Bristol to support the war efforts during the Bristol City blitz.

The air raids began on 24th November and lasted over six hours. 148 German bombers rained 1,540 tonnes of high explosives and over 12,000 incendiary bombs down on the city. Within an hour over 70 fires were raging across the city.

As the Minehead crew entered the Bedminster area of Bristol, the fire appliance was involved in a collision.
Sadly, 38 year old Fireman Dovell sustained serious injuries and died the following day on the 26th November 1940.

Tommorow we take the opportunity to reflect on the thoughts that the crew must have experienced on their way to Bristol - wondering what awaits them and the risks they would face, and their sadness and thoughts as they returned home again after loosing one of their own.

Little detail is known about the exact cause of the collision 85 years ago, but ultimately, Fireman Dovell never returned from this callout.
We remember him and his colleagues.🫡

This week we said goodbye to our faithful 54 plate 4x4 MAN fire appliance 😢

She has been a tough and reliable workhorse, that has served Minehead well as the first away appliance for many many years.

She has been replaced with a new 74 plate Volvo Medium Rescue Pump.

This is the last of the current batch of 45 Volvo appliances brought into service with Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service over the last 4 years.

The first few images show the older truck after her final wash, before heading back with the fleet team to Chelston, and then alongside the new Volvo.

The other images show her parked next to the second away appliance and a selection of locker images.

The new appliance comes with lots of new kit to complement some of the existing equipment moved over from the older truck.

This new Volvo comes with the latest:
Lithium Ion battery powered RTC cutting equipment, a new winch, new vehicle stability struts, new air lifting bags, a new selection of hoses and branches (nozzles), digitally controlled major pump and foam system, Lithium Ion battery powered Positive Pressure Ventilation fan and Light Portable Pump, plus more 😱

Keep checking in our page over the next few months to see updates with the crews training with the new equipment and additional images.

We are also still Recruiting new firefighters, so if you want to serve your local community using the latest equipment and vehicle, check out the recruitment page in the service website.
