Today at Modbury we had some theory input followed by practical training in gas tight suits.

Although we don’t carry these suits on our appliance, it’s important to understand how challenging they can be, particularly when it comes to dexterity, communications and heat from wearing the suit.

We had a good laugh putting them to the test with various tasks. We had a decontamination area also set up to practise the process of what would happen operationally.

Great training and a good bit of fun along the way! 🚒👨‍🚒

We’re deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of seven children and two adults, in both inland and coastal waters, over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Our Chief Fire Officer, Gavin Ellis, spoke on BBC 5 Live this morning about the dangers of inland water, where accidental drowning deaths have now been higher than coastal incidents for the seventh year in a row.

Although rivers, lakes and reservoirs may look calm and inviting in the hot weather, hidden currents and cold water shock can quickly become life-threatening. Water temperatures are currently only around 14–16°C, which can cause an involuntary gasp response and lead to drowning.

Please avoid swimming in inland waterways and encourage others to do the same.

If you unexpectedly enter the water, remember to float:

• Tilt your head back with ears submerged
• Breathe normally
• Move your hands to stay afloat
• Spread your arms and legs for stability

Floating can save your life.

🚒 Training night at Modbury Fire Station 🚒

Last night we carried out a drill simulating a chemical spill, followed by firefighter decontamination.

We also practised setting up an improvised dam to contain any potentially contaminated water.

If you’d like to know more about what we do, or are interested in joining, come along on a Tuesday evening between 19:00–21:00.

Modbury and Kingston Fire Stations are looking for On-Call firefighters to join the team. If you live or work nearby and want to help protect your community, this could be for you. Full training is provided and our weekly drill night is every Tuesday evening, where you can come along, learn new skills, and be part of this great, friendly crew.
