Final Countdown

The final countdown is on — this year’s Moffat Mountain Rescue Charity Challenge is almost here, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back to the hills on Sunday 7th June.

Over the weekend of Sunday 17th May the team were out on Queensberry, checking routes, testing radio comms and making sure every detail is exactly as it should be for our wonderful supporters. Your safety matters to us, and these final preparations mean we’re ready for a brilliant day on the hill.

This event is our biggest opportunity of the year to raise the vital funds that keep Moffat Mountain Rescue operational.
Every pound helps us respond to walkers, runners, families and members of our community when they need us most.

If you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still time:

Dressed for Success: The 2026 Charity Challenge T‑Shirt Reveal

It’s nearly time to get dressed for success — quite literally.
This year’s Moffat Mountain Rescue Charity Challenge T‑shirt has arrived, and it’s already a favourite among the team.

A huge thank you goes to David Hardie Engineering of Dumfries, whose generous sponsorship has helped make this year’s and many of our previous years designs possible. Their continued support means the world to us and to everyone who relies on our service.

As we prepare for the event, our volunteers continue their regular training to stay ready for the wide range of situations we may be called to.

Emergency call‑outs can occur at any time and in many different locations.
To maintain readiness, the team train across varied environments and scenarios.

On Sunday 19th April, we carried out a training exercise at Waterloo Monument, focusing on the safe extraction of a casualty from a confined space.

The session covered navigation, area sweeps, search planning, radio communication and technical rigging.
Once the simulated casualty was located, the team provided appropriate care and established a safe system of work to support the extraction and handover to paramedics.

Search and rescue can take place in many settings and conditions, and our volunteers remain prepared throughout the year.

24/7, 365 days.

We are powered by donations.
Driven by serving.

Today, 30 April, Sarah Campbell is taking on an extraordinary and deeply personal challenge in memory of her dad, Charlie McCreadie — a man who gave over 33 years of service to Moffat Mountain Rescue Team and remains one of the most valued and loved members in our team’s history.

To mark five years since Charlie’s passing, Sarah and his close friend Sandy will climb Criffel, Grey Mare’s Tail, and Tinto, with a 17‑mile cycle through Moffat in between. These hills span the area Charlie knew so well — the ground he worked on, trained on, and protected for more than three decades.

Charlie was not only a dedicated team member; he was part of the fabric of Moffat MRT. His experience, humour, steadiness and kindness shaped generations of volunteers. His absence is still felt, and his contribution will always be part of who we are.

Sarah’s challenge honours both sides of his life — his commitment to mountain rescue and his long career in construction — by raising funds for Lighthouse Club, a charity providing vital mental health and wellbeing support to construction workers and their families.

This week we want to share some details about each of the four walks available during this year's Moffat Mountain Rescue Charity Challenge on Sunday 7th June 2026.

👉 🥾 Choose Your Walk — Feel Confident, Supported and Ready ✅

Walk 1 – Nature & Community Walk
🌿 Walk 1: The Nature & Community Walk

Based at the Moffat Community Nature Reserve, this is a fully accessible, relaxed and welcoming route designed for families, children and anyone looking for a gentle introduction to the event. The atmosphere is supportive and sociable. MRT volunteers will be present throughout, making this a great choice if you want to enjoy the outdoors at your own pace while knowing help and guidance are close at hand. There will be plenty of opportunities to pause, explore nature and enjoy the surroundings make this a stress‑free and confidence‑boosting day out.
🍔 Post‑walk refreshments included
👕 Limited‑edition t‑shirt with pre‑registration

Walk 2 – Queensberry Summit
⛰️ Walk 2: Queensberry Summit (Approx. 10km, 430m ascent)

This rewarding hill walk climbs Queensberry, the highest hill in the area and a well‑known Donald and Graham. Although it’s the shortest of the hill routes, it offers a real sense of achievement without being overly technical. The route follows tracks and open hillside, with MRT‑recced navigation and way‑marking to guide you. Ideal for confident walkers new to summits or those ready to take the next step up from low‑level walks, this route balances challenge with reassurance. MRT team members will be monitoring the route, helping ensure a safe, enjoyable and well‑supported hill day.
✅ Fully recced and supported

Walk 3 – Extended Queensberry Route
🏔️ Walk 3: Extended Queensberry Route

Designed for regular hill walkers, this longer route takes in a series of minor summits including Harestanes Heights, Mid Height and Penbreck before reaching Queensberry itself. The terrain is varied but straightforward, using quad bike tracks and well‑worn sheep paths rather than constructed trails. With no technical ground and generous time allowances, it offers a satisfying step up in distance while remaining achievable for those comfortable spending a full day in the hills. Clear route planning, MRT oversight and the shared event atmosphere all help make this an enjoyable and confidence‑affirming challenge.

🍔 Refreshments + 👕 t‑shirt with pre‑registration

Walk 4 – The Big Challenge
💪 Walk 4: The Big Challenge

This is the ultimate option for experienced walkers looking for a full‑day mountain experience in the Lowthers. The route covers more remote terrain and greater distance, offering stunning views and a strong sense of journey and accomplishment. While this walk demands good fitness, navigation awareness and hill experience, it is still carefully planned, fully recced and supported by MRT volunteers. Participants can take confidence in knowing the route has been designed with safety in mind, allowing them to focus on enjoying the challenge, the landscape and the camaraderie of the event.

🌄💛 Book Your Place & Walk with Purpose 🥾
Every entry fee directly supports Moffat Mountain Rescue — helping fund the training 🧭, equipment 🚑, vehicles 🚙 and resources our volunteers rely on to be there when our community and visitors need us most. We simply couldn’t operate without this support.

🚨 Call-Out: Grey Mare’s Tail – 08 April 2026 🚨

The team was called out today at 13:26 hrs to assist a walker who had become unwell while enjoying a day walk at the stunning Grey Mare’s Tail. The individual was visiting the area with family, including granchildren, and began to feel unwell during the ascent.

5 members of Moffat Mountain Rescue Team responded, along with 2 members of Police Scotland Mountain Rescue. The team RV’d at Grey Mare’s Tail before deploying a hasty party to the casualty’s location. The casualty was assessed by RRMT and, with support and a confidence rope, was able to walk safely off the hill while the remainder of the team stood by in case further assistance was required.

The walker was safely returned to the car park, and the team was stood down at 15:22 hrs.

It is always satisfying to be able to support both residents of our region and those visiting this beautiful part of Scotland. Grey Mare’s Tail is a spectacular walk, but it is also one of our most technical rescue environments, and we’re proud to help keep people safe.
