Good morning,
We continue to work tirelessly to engage with as many members as possible regarding the ballot for industrial action that is currently underway in relation to our pay offer.
You will no doubt have recently seen media coverage indicating that other areas of the public sector are to receive a 5.5% pay offer, the train drivers have settled their dispute with a huge pay award, and the junior doctors have accepted their offer of 22% over 2 years. Why is Local Government so different? We provide services to some of the most vulnerable in society and many roles in Local Government are what keeps our communities operating. We deserve more than the dismal offer of £1290 pro rata.
There is money out there to fund this pay claim. It is just not being spent in the right places, if people want first class public services then they need to be prepared to pay for them and the people who deliver them need paying too.
The low pay commission estimates that in April 2025 the national minimum wage will rise to £12.10 per hour. This will wipe out the bottom 3 points on the NJC pay spine, this is the entire first grade on our pay structure, and will further devalue the pay of others.
An improved pay offer requires a huge ballot turnout and a big yes vote for industrial action - the new Government in Westminster will not want 375,000 Local Government workers on strike, although a strike would remind people about the essential services we deliver.
Please ensure you return your ballot paper by 16th October. If you have not received a ballot paper, the Ballot Hotline opens today. Please ask members to contact 08000 857 857.
UNISON have been out and about all over the County this week, hopefully we've seen you at one of our drop in sessions. We shall be in Ty Dewi Sant today and tomorrow at lunch time, and shall also be in Flint High School from 3.30pm today. We would love to see you there. I have also held two online pay briefing sessions and if there is sufficient interest I could arrange another for next week - please comment below if you would like to speak to us either in person or on line!
