Shire Hall Monmouth Shire Hall Museum is a Grade I listed building located in the centre of Monmouth. The Shire Hall is located in the centre of Monmouth, Wales.

The Shire Hall Museum will close to the public on 20th December 2025 and will be closed throughout 2026 to reopen early in 2027 as we undergo an exciting refurbishment. It is a Grade I listed, classically designed building designed by Philip Fisher of Bristol in 1724, Shire Hall was the scene of one of the most significant trials in British history when, in 1839/40, John Frost and other Chartists

were tried for their involvement in the Chartist Riots in Newport. In 2011 the entire Shire Hall building was sympathetically refurbished to its original state. An important part of the project has been the installation of a lift to allow everyone unrestricted access to all of the building; it is open 7 days a week to the public offering self-guided tours of our fully interactive Courtroom, Holding Cells and Judges Chamber; our elegant yet timeless architectural rooms are also available for private hire! Mae Amgueddfa Neuadd y Sir, Trefynwy, ar gau ar hyn o bryd tra byddwn yn cynnal gwaith adnewyddu cyffrous. Bydd yr amgueddfa yn parhau ar gau drwy gydol 2026, ac rydym yn gobeithio croesawu ymwelwyr yn ôl yn gynnar yn 2027 gyda mannau gwell a chyfleoedd newydd i gysylltu â’n hanes lleol.

The Shire Hall Museum in Monmouth is currently closed while we carry out some exciting refurbishment work. The museum will remain closed throughout 2026, and we're aiming to welcome visitors back in early 2027 with improved spaces and new opportunities to connect with our local history.

As we plan for the museum's reopening, we'd love to hear your thoughts on some of the ideas we're exploring. These include dedicated sessions designed to provide a calmer, more relaxed museum experience, as well as extending opening hours on selected evenings.

While exciting new exhibits and displays are being developed, protective coverings and careful working practices are helping to ensure the original fabric of the building remains safe throughout the project. 🤩

Preserving our heritage is just as important as creating new experiences for visitors, and we're committed to doing both every step of the way.

✨Mae man storio newydd yn cael ei adeiladu ar un pen o'n hystafell gymunedol, gan greu datrysiad ymarferol a fydd yn helpu'r gofod i weithio'n galetach ar ran ymwelwyr.

Bydd y storfa fawr yn gartref i fyrddau, cadeiriau ac offer gweithgareddau, gan ganiatáu i'r ystafell gael ei chlirio'n gyflym a'i defnyddio fel man agored ar gyfer sesiynau actif, gweithdai a digwyddiadau, yn ogystal â gweithgareddau pen-fwrdd.

Mae'r storfa hefyd wedi'i chynllunio i fod yn anhygoel o gryf, gyda rhai o'n eitemau casgliad mwy yn cael eu harddangos ar ei phen. Mae hyn yn golygu y bydd ymwelwyr yn dal i allu mwynhau gweld gwrthrychau o'n casgliad, hyd yn oed pan fyddant wedi cael eu storio.

✨A new storage area is being constructed at one end of our community room, creating a practical solution that will help the space work harder for visitors.

The large store will house tables, chairs and activity equipment, allowing the room to be cleared quickly and used as an open space for active sessions, workshops and events, as well as table-based activities.

The store has also been designed to be incredibly strong, with some of our larger collection items displayed on top. This means visitors will still be able to enjoy seeing objects from our collection, even when they're in storage.

It's one more way we're creating flexible spaces while keeping our heritage visible and accessible.

🏛️ A blank canvas with big plans - This space may look empty now, but it's the beginning of something exciting: the new Monmouth Gallery.

The gallery will eventually showcase stories, objects and people connected to Monmouth and the surrounding area.

Before any displays can be installed, important groundwork must take place.

Beneath the floorboards, new cabling has been installed to support modern lighting, display power and enhanced security systems. While these changes might not be the most visible part of the project, they provide the essential foundations needed to display and protect the collection for years to come.

Every great gallery starts with good preparation.

Mae gwelliannau cyffrous ar y gweill yn Siambr yr Hen Gyngor, gan wneud y gofod yn fwy hyblyg ac ymarferol i ysgolion, teuluoedd a grwpiau cymunedol.

Bydd y lloriau newydd yn disodli'r carped presennol, gan greu arwyneb sy'n haws i'w lanhau ac sy'n fwy addas ar gyfer ystod ehangach o weithgareddau ymarferol.

Ochr yn ochr â hyn, mae cegin newydd yn cael ei gosod, sy'n darparu storfa werthfawr yn ogystal â sinc ar gyfer golchi offer crefft a dwylo bach ar ôl sesiynau creadigol.

Exciting improvements are underway in the Old Council Chamber, making the space more flexible and practical for schools, families and community groups.

The new flooring will replace the existing carpet, creating a surface that's easier to clean and better suited to a wider range of hands-on activities.

Alongside this, a new kitchenette is being installed, providing valuable storage as well as a sink for washing craft equipment and little hands after creative sessions.

Together, these improvements will help us offer an even greater variety of learning activities and family-friendly events in a space designed to inspire curiosity and creativity.

🎨 Mae croeso ffres yn dechrau ymddangos 🎨 A fresh welcome is taking shape

The loggia and covered entrance area are nearing the end of their redecoration, helping to create a smart and welcoming first impression for visitors to the newly refurbished museum.

The railings, woodwork and ceiling have all received a fresh coat of paint, brightening the space and restoring its character.
As work outside comes to a close, attention will be turning to the museum's interior over the coming weeks.

We'll be sharing progress updates along the way, so keep an eye on our social channels to see the transformation unfold.
