Information on Road Resurfacing

Drivers across Aberdeenshire are being advised to take extra care as a new programme of road works gets underway.

Aberdeenshire Council has begun its 2026 surface dressing programme across the north-east, helping to maintain and extend the life of the region’s road network.

While this essential work improves road safety and durability in the long term by sealing surfaces and boosting skid resistance, there may be short-term changes for drivers to be aware of.

Following treatment, loose chippings will be present on the road surface for a period of time. Although roads are swept several times, it can take a few days for the stones to fully bed in. During this time:

⚠️Drive at or below the signed speed limits
⚠️Leave extra space between you and the vehicle ahead
⚠️Take extra care when braking, steering or cornering

Driving too fast can displace chippings, increasing the risk of skidding or potential damage to vehicles.

Slow, steady traffic actually helps the process by pressing the chippings into the surface and ensuring a longer-lasting repair.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while these important works are carried out to keep Aberdeenshire’s roads in good condition.

A message from our Scottish Youth Parliament representatives:

“In June, we have our national gathering of MSYPs (known as a Scottish Youth Parliament sitting). Sittings involve a wide range of activities but perhaps the most important one is the motions sessions.

To represent the young people of Aberdeenshire during these sessions, we have created a survey (and other engagement resources) to allow us to collate their views and vote accordingly.”

Please take a look at the survey below if you are aged 12-25.

Aberdeenshire Council Local Development Plan Bid Assessment forthcoming engagement

Good afternoon,

As part of preparing the next Local Development Plan (LDP) Aberdeenshire Council held a ‘Call for Sites’ process in 2025 whereby landowners/agents/developers were invited to submit proposals for land to be considered for inclusion in the next LDP.

We received 373 proposals which we have mapped. The proposals comprise land on existing allocated sites (in the extant Local Development Plan 2023) and unallocated sites and therefore a number of these sites may already be familiar to your Community Council from previous engagement.

The 373 proposals have been undergoing initial assessment by Planning Officers’. This assessment will ultimately result in a recommendation of ‘Preferred’, ‘Reasonable Alternative’ or ‘Unsuitable’. We would like to involve you in the assessment process by sharing the Planning Officers’ recommendations in your Community Council area and seeking your comment on that recommendation. In early June we propose to circulate maps of the bid proposals alongside a table which will provide reasoning for the Planning Officers’ recommendation and with a 6-8 week time period for responding. Please note, for confidentiality reasons, we will not be circulating the bid submissions or the Planning Officers’ full technical assessments.

It is important to note that at this stage no decisions are being made on which sites will progress to a Proposed Aberdeenshire Local Development Plan. Outputs from engagement with Community Councils, Key Agencies and Internal Council departments will inform revisions to the initial assessments where necessary. Later this year we will have discussions with Elected Members to seek consensus as to the ‘preferred options’ for inclusion in the drafting of the Proposed Aberdeenshire Local Development Plan, which we are on track to publish in Winter 2027 for public consultation and provides the main opportunity to comment on proposed allocations.

If you have any questions regarding this process in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact me.

‘Heart of the High Street’ awards will celebrate top customer service across Aberdeenshire

A new retail awards scheme will shine a spotlight on the people and businesses which go above and beyond to deliver exceptional customer service across Aberdeenshire.

Launched this week, Aberdeenshire Council’s Heart of the High Street campaign aims to recognise the individuals, teams and businesses whose commitment to customer care helps keep the region’s town centres vibrant and welcoming.

With sponsorship from local businesses and organisations, the campaign has two key elements – a town centre awards programme and a business support programme focused on raising customer service standards.

Eight award categories have been created to reflect the range and diversity of businesses across Aberdeenshire:

• Making Every Customer Count: Retail Award
• The Extra Mile: Professional Services Award
• The Warm Welcome: Hospitality Award
• The Experience Makers: Leisure & Tourism Award
• Supporting Health & Happiness: Wellbeing Award
• Outstanding Individual
• New Business of the Year
• Loves Local Ambassador

Make your nominations by 7th June online at: engage.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/heart-of-the-high-street

To be eligible, businesses must be based within a town centre and nominations can be submitted by customers as well as by businesses themselves. Public voting will be supported by an independent judging panel comprising representatives from the business community and Aberdeenshire Council.

Alongside the awards, the initiative will work with key partners including Business Gateway to promote and encourage customer service training and development opportunities. This will be supported by the creation of a network of business ambassadors, drawn from winning businesses, who will help showcase good practice through case studies and peer learning.

Two customer service training sessions have also been established to support local businesses in delivering outstanding customer service. The sessions provide practical tips, shared learning, and inspiration to help businesses strengthen service standards, build customer loyalty and celebrate our town centres. You can book your space at https://bit.ly/HeartoftheHighStreet

Cllr Alan Turner, chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee, said: “Good customer service is one of the key factors which can set the in-person retail or service experience apart from that undertaken online, helping to drive local footfall and spend in town centres. This is supported by research which has found that good customer service is a key driver for improving town centre vitality and viability.

“Alongside the economic benefits, in-person visits to Aberdeenshire town centres also offer an opportunity for social interactions. These are vital because they foster community belonging and improve physical and mental wellbeing. By serving as focal points for people to gather and connect, town centres can become powerful public health and community assets. I would encourage our communities and businesses to get nominating now to ensure that our good service is duly recognised.”

The inaugural Heart of the High Street awards ceremony will be presented at a showcase town centre event in September.
