A chilly evening here, with frost forecast overnight.

Behind our unusual curved wall are old fireplaces- now blocked up - that gardeners would once light on nights like this. The warmth travelled through the wall via hidden chimneys. Helping to protect the blossom on the fruit trees growing alongside it.

A clever bit of garden history!

The honey bees love the borage in the walled garden. We love the flavour it adds to their honey. It also has an additional benefit of slowing the crytalisation of the honey, which happens naturally over time, keeping it runny.

Bees, butterflies, birds and even dogs make for great company in the walled garden this afternoon.

Boer War Letters
Follow our blog BOER WAR LETTERS, Letters home from JRE Stansfeld. After graduating from Sandhurst aged 19, Johnnie Stansfeld joined the Gordon Highlanders and was immediately posted to South Africa where he spent the next 2 years. Transcriptions of his letters, this blog gives an extraordinary first hand account of his time in South Africa.

MISSING – WHEREABOUTS UNKNOWN

The herons flew away at the beginning of May, and over the weekend, the spider (with her 90cm-wide web) departed, taking the cherub with her.

Though not valuable, they were deeply special to us, to the garden, and to our visitors.

If seen or returned, we'd be grateful. Please share.

We do have CCTV footage and will give 24hrs for the items to be returned before we share with the police.
