Under control = on a lead. Whether you’re on a quiet trail or a busy path, keeping your dog under control means keeping them on a lead.

Even well-behaved dogs can be startled or chase wildlife, and during times like nesting season, that can cause real harm.
🐾 Protect wildlife
🐾 Respect other walkers
🐾 Keep your dog safe

You might have seen we've launched our Local Plan Consultation, but you might be thinking, what is a Local Plan? 🤔

A Local Plan is a document prepared by the council that sets out how an area will grow and develop over time. It helps decide things like:
🏡 Where new homes and businesses should be located
🏡 What infrastructure is needed (things like roads and schools)
🏡 Which areas should be protected, such as green spaces and historic sites
🏡 How development can support climate action and healthy communities

It’s used to guide planning decisions, so it plays a key role in shaping the future of Northumberland.

Even on a warm day, open water can be dangerously cold 🥶

Cold water shock can affect your breathing and make it difficult to swim and lead to drowning.

It may be tempting to cool off in open water such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs but cold water can kill.

Think before you or your friends enter the water – cold water shock can affect the strongest swimmers.

It's forecast for warm weather in Northumberland this bank holiday, but please remember this potentially life-saving advice from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service if you're heading to the coast, rivers or lakes 💦

🌊 Strong Currents: Even calm-looking rivers can have strong currents beneath the surface.
⚠️ Hidden Hazards: Rocks, debris, and sudden drop-offs can pose serious dangers.
🥶 Cold Shock: Despite the heat, river water can be cold enough to cause shock, cramps, or hypothermia.
💦 Stay safe and cool in safer environments like supervised swimming pools or paddling pools.
❌ Never jump in to help someone. If there's something that will float nearby, throw it to them. Alternatively, encourage them to float on their back.
☎️ Call 999 if you can. If there's no phone, shout for help.

We're beginning work on a new Northumberland Local Plan which will guide how the county grows over the next 20 years.
As Council Leader Glen Sanderson explains, as part of this early stage, we're seeking views from residents, community groups and businesses on the key issues and priorities the new plan should address.
