Brinkburn Priory

Brinkburn Priory Brinkburn Priory - a beautifully restored 12th century church accompanied by an elegant 19th century manor house, set by a bend in the River Coquet.

Brinkburn Priory is nestled in a secluded and tranquil bend of the River Coquet, a scenic10 minute walk from the car park. It was founded in the 1130s as a community of Augustinian canons. Never a wealthy house and frequently troubled by Scottish raids, it was one of the first monasteries to be closed in the Dissolution of 1536. Despite this, the 12th century church survives today. After falling g

radually into disrepair, it was sensitively restored and reroofed in the 19th century. The church now boasts a tiled floor, an array of beautiful stained glass windows and an impressive organ donated by Sir William Armstrong. The manor house dates back originally to the 16th century, at which point the monastic buildings were converted into a private residence. Most of what you see today dates back to the 19th century, as the house was radically altered during this time. It remained a fmaily home until 1953.
