Many thanks to the constituents who attended our street surgery today in Margaret Street.

We walked around afterwards in the Coathill area, and have picked up a few issues which we will now be dealing with.

It was also great to see that the first occupants have moved in at the council housing site on School Street, which is a milestone project in the council’s New Supply Programme.

Thank you to our constituents who joined us for the street surgery this afternoon on Henderson Street in Dundyvan.

After the street surgery, we took a walk around the surrounding area, and picked up a couple of council issues which will now be taken forward.

It was also good to see works underway on yet more properties in the area as part of the Council’s housing investment programme.

Memorial bench pays tribute to local play champion..

A lasting tribute to Coatbridge activist Mary Fagan has been installed at the play area she helped create almost three decades ago.

Together with other local parents, Mary founded Parent Action for Safe Play (PASP) in 1996. Three years later, their determination and hard work were rewarded when the play area officially opened.
Mary continued to lead the organisation as chairperson, and PASP subsequently turned its attention to creating a community hub where young people and families could access a range of vital support services that had grown from the original project.

The organisation set out to establish a permanent base from which it could provide out-of-school care, crèche services and adult training opportunities at the heart of the community.
The Children and Youth Development Centre opened its doors in June 2006 and has continued to grow and evolve in response to the changing needs of local families.

A memorial bench dedicated to Mary was unveiled at the PASP project site on Wednesday, 5 August. The ceremony was attended by PASP committee members, project staff, family members and many others who remember Mary as a powerful force for positive change and a tireless champion for children, families and her community.

Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of Communities, said: “Mary was an incredible person and a true champion of children’s right to play.
“She firmly believed that where children play, communities thrive.
“Along with others in the area, she fundraised, promoted the cause, hosted conferences highlighting the importance and value of play, and approached every possible funding body that could help bring the dream to life.”
Over the years, PASP has received numerous national awards and accolades in recognition of its work.

Today, the organisation remains committed to providing the services and support its community needs, while honouring the memory of its much-loved founder and staunchest advocate, Mary Fagan.
