Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) The official page for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). Our main role is to protect and improve the environment.

SEPA is Scotland’s environmental regulator and is responsible for protecting and improving Scotland's unique and beautiful environment. Our work makes Scotland a greener place to live and creates a sustainable legacy for future generations. We do this by being an excellent environmental regulator, helping business and industry to understand their environmental responsibilities, enabling customers to comply with legislation and good practice and to realise the many economic benefits of good environmental practice. We protect communities by regulating activities that can cause harmful pollution and by monitoring the quality of Scotland's air, land and water. The regulations we implement also cover the keeping and use, and the accumulation and disposal, of radioactive substances.

Having a clear out during the October break?

Before someone takes away your unwanted items, make sure they're a registered waste carrier.

Ask to see their SEPA registration number. It's a simple step that can help prevent waste crime and protect people, businesses and the environment.

If you spot suspicious activity involving waste, report it: sepa.org.uk/report

Three regional Flood Alerts and one Flood Warning have been issued.

Heavy overnight rain and further rain through the day may lead to moderate flooding impacts in the north of Scotland. Potential impacts include localised flooding of low lying land and roads and individual properties.

The Lower Tweed has reached Significant Scarcity following our latest assessment of water scarcity conditions.

The Lower Tweed is now at the highest level on Scotland's five-tier water scarcity scale, while the Tyne (Lothian) and Tweed catchments remain at Moderate Scarcity.

Although rainfall over the past week brought some improvements, low to very low river flows continue across much of eastern Scotland and more sustained rainfall will be needed to support long-term recovery.

From 1st January 2027, waste permitted facilities that receive controlled waste will need to use the new digital waste tracking service.

Get ahead by registering early, testing the system and checking your software is ready. Digital waste tracking will help create a more transparent and efficient waste system while supporting efforts to tackle waste crime.

Following an investigation, Pat Munro (Alness) Limited has been issued with a £32,100.81 Variable Monetary Penalty for the disposal of controlled waste at Caplich Quarry, Alness.

Our investigation used satellite imagery, trial pits and LiDAR technology to establish the scale of the activity, finding a former pond had been progressively infilled with controlled waste between 2018 and 2024 without a waste management licence in place. The volume deposited above the previous water level was estimated at around 20,000 tonnes.

With October well underway, autumn colours are transforming Scotland's landscapes.

Trees are turning shades of gold, amber and red, while migratory birds continue their journeys through our wetlands. Cooler days and crisp mornings are becoming more familiar, bringing a reminder that winter isn't far away.

Though nature may seem to be slowing down, it's a season of preparation and change for many species.

From colourful landscapes to wildlife sightings, what have you noticed outdoors lately?
