WOODPECKER! ❤️
These great spotted woodpecker chicks (Dendrocopos major) were brought into us after their nest had been destroyed. Luckily they were both unharmed when assessed on arrival. Sadly the smallest of the chicks passed away a couple days later, however the other chick is doing well and has grown loads just in the short space of time he has been with us! Fingers crossed he soon will start eating on his own and continue growing well so he can be released later in the month! 🌳

Please always remember to check trees, hedges, grass, or any other outdoor areas before starting any work that consists or cutting or removing things. You never know what could be hiding inside! 🔍

A cake sale was recently held at Rushbury C of E Primary School, where a group of children got together and organised an after school event selling cakes 🧁 , bakes 🍰, popcorn 🍿 and loom band bracelets they had made. There was also a name the hedgehog 🦔 competition. Our Community Fundraiser, Tina, had a great time meeting the children, who had been researching all about Cuan Wildlife and wanted to help raise funds for wildlife and the environment. They chatted about lots of birds and animals and about the creatures we look after at Cuan. A wonderful £193.87 was raised by the children - thank you so much for your support, which will help to keep feeding all the hundreds of babies we are currently looking after!

HOGLETS! 🦔💚
We are now starting to get many baby hedgehogs coming into care for a variety of reasons, most being found out in the day and alone. These little ones are getting hand fed every 2-3 hours from the moment we open right until we close in the evening. Hoglets even smaller require more regular feeds and even some feeds in the night! 🌟

Did you know, hoglets are born completely blind, deaf, and almost hairless, with their protective spines hidden beneath a fluid-filled layer of skin (known as the oedematous membrane). Within the first hour after birth, this layer begins to shrink, revealing their first set of soft white spines. A second generation of darker, coloured spines starts to emerge around 1.5–2.5 days later. As the hoglet grows, these early spines are gradually replaced, and by approximately one month of age, their third generation of stronger adult spines begins to develop! 🧡

SWIFTS, SWALLOWS AND HOUSE MARTINS! 🧡

It's that time of year again! Swallows, house martins, and swifts are summer visitors to the UK, arriving from Africa each spring to breed before returning south later in the year.

Swallows are recognised by their glossy blue-black backs and long forked tails, often nesting in barns and sheds. House martins have a distinctive white rump and build mud nests under the eaves of buildings. Swifts spend most of their lives in the air, feeding, drinking, and even sleeping on the wing, only landing into their nesting sites up high to breed.

All three species feed exclusively on flying insects and are important indicators of environmental health. Unfortunately, habitat loss, declining insect numbers, and reduced nesting opportunities have contributed to population declines across the UK.

These birds require specialised rehabilitation due to their unique diets and feeding behaviours. Incorrect care can quickly cause serious health problems, especially in chicks. As they spend only a few months in the UK before migrating, prompt and appropriate treatment is essential. If you find an injured, orphaned, or grounded swift, swallow, or house martin, please contact a registered wildlife rehabilitator or specialist rescue organisation as soon as possible for advice and assistance.

This is the one day of the year when you'll get the opportunity to see behind the scenes at one of the busiest wildlife hospitals in the UK and see our wildlife being cared for by our fabulous Wildlife Care Assistants.

Lots to see and do – Fun Dog Show kindly organised by Telford Pet Services, craft stalls, charity stalls, games, raffle, tombolas, bouncy castles, face painting and balloon modelling by , food and drink stalls, ice cream - and much more! Entry to the Open Day is just £5 per person – under 10’s go free!

Dog Show - 15 Classes to choose from to take part in the Dog Show - you can book in advance of the day to save time by using the booking form below, or visit our website cuanwildliferescue.org.uk - please ensure you read the Dog Welfare Guidelines before entering/bringing your dog along to the Dog Show, to ensure the health and wellbeing of your pets.
