Yesterday our Year 10 GCSE Music students took part in the culmination of the Lights, Camera, Score project, working alongside students from North Halifax Grammar School, professional composers Gregory Boardman and Ben Ellin and musicians from the English Chamber Orchestra.

The day began with a special concert from the English Chamber Orchestra for pupils from Calder Primary School, giving our younger musicians the opportunity to experience live orchestral music up close before the GCSE students got to work on their own project.

Over the past half term, Year 10 students have been composing original music to accompany a short film, developing their composition, listening and performance skills. Yesterday they had the exciting opportunity to hear their music brought to life by performing alongside professional musicians before taking part in a live performance.

The day concluded with a fantastic showcase for parents, carers and guests, celebrating the students' creativity, hard work and musical achievement. We are incredibly proud of the professionalism, commitment and enthusiasm shown by all involved.

A huge thank you to the English Chamber Orchestra, Gregory Boardman, Ben Ellin, North Halifax Grammar School, Calder Primary School and everyone at Calder High School who helped make this unique experience possible.

We look forward to sharing the finished film and soundtrack when the final recording is complete!

Student Parliament Recognised with Community Award

On Tuesday 12th May our Student Parliament was honoured to receive the Service to the Community award at the Mayor’s Making Ceremony, hosted by Hebden Royd Town Council. This prestigious recognition celebrates the outstanding commitment shown by our students in supporting and strengthening the local community.
Through a range of initiatives and events, the Student Parliament has demonstrated a genuine dedication to making a positive impact, from organising charitable efforts to engaging with local causes and representing student voice in meaningful ways. Their enthusiasm, leadership, and compassion have set a powerful example, highlighting the importance of civic responsibility among young people.

We received the award jointly alongside Flossy who won it for her amazing charity work, raising funds for Cancer Research. At the time of the awards Flossy had raised £4900 which is incredible. Student parliament then promised to donate their £100 winnings to Flossy's cause to get her to £5000. We are extremely lucky that Flossy will be joining the Calder family as of September and excited to welcome her. (if anyone would like to donate to her fundraising in the name of Cancer Research please click on the following link - https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/flossy-and-emme-busking

Receiving this award at such a significant civic event is a testament to the hard work and ambition of our students, as well as the strong partnership between the school and the wider community. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing their continued contributions in the future.

A social worker from Lancashire County Council came in today to talk to Year 10 Health and Social care students about the role of a social worker. She detailed the qualifications needed, the day to day responsibilities involved in her role, different challenges and rewards in her job, and took questions from the students at the end. The students gained a great insight into this career.
