There's finishing a job.

And then there's checking that one last thing. Just to be sure.

Anyone in the trade will know how that goes.

Happy Friday from the Portcullis team.

“Portcullis are definitely different, they’re very professional in their approach to every project. After the initial consultation they listen carefully and then advise, and seem to just get the job done. Their enthusiasm for your project is so refreshing and the team are very polite and friendly.”

It's always lovely to receive feedback like this.

We take pride in the work we do, but just as importantly, we want our customers to feel listened to, well advised and confident they've got the right people for the job.

Thanks for the kind words, Martin. They're much appreciated by the whole team.

There's a lot of potential sitting above our heads.

Take this warehouse in Birmingham.

119 solar panels. 55.335 kWp of installed capacity. And a roof that's now doing more than keeping the weather out.

Our team completed this commercial solar installation across two different roof sections, each requiring its own mounting arrangement.

The aim? To help the business generate more of its own electricity, reduce its reliance on the grid and manage energy costs over the longer term.

It's a substantial installation, but the thinking behind it is pretty straightforward.

Make better use of the space you've already got.

“It'll only take five minutes.”

Usually followed by:

“While you're here, could you just have a quick look at something else?”

And that's how five minutes becomes the rest of the afternoon.

Anyone in the trades knows.

Happy Friday.

Outdoor lighting can make a huge difference to how a home looks and feels.

But choosing the lights is only part of the job.

Before installing anything, there are a few things worth thinking about.

Will the fittings be suitable for the location and weather exposure? Where will the cables run? Do you want the lights on a timer, sensor or separate switch? And will the positioning give you useful light without shining straight into the neighbours' windows?

Getting those details right at the start makes all the difference.

Because good outdoor lighting should look great, work properly and be built to last.

A warehouse needs more than a few lights and somewhere to plug things in.

There’s power for equipment, lighting that makes the space practical to work in, emergency lighting, fire safety and the infrastructure that brings everything together.

At Packaging One in Middlewich, our team delivered a commercial electrical installation covering three-phase power, high-bay LED lighting, fire alarms, emergency lighting and mezzanine systems.

Different elements. One coordinated installation.

Because when a business is ready to get moving, the electrics need to be ready too.

We know our strengths.

Full electrical fit-out? Absolutely.

Making a sandwich the size of a small bungalow? We’ll leave that to Sandwich Sandwich.

A throwback to this project on Tottenham Court Road, where we completed the electrical installation for their London site.

Still a pretty good-looking job, if we do say so ourselves.

Happy Friday.

New machine ordered. Delivery date booked. Then someone asks:
“Does it need three-phase?”

Not the ideal time to find out.

Three-phase power is common in workshops, warehouses, commercial kitchens and other businesses running higher-demand equipment, but simply having a commercial premises doesn’t mean you automatically need it.

What matters is what the equipment requires, what supply you already have and whether the existing installation has enough capacity.

And even if three-phase is already there, that doesn’t necessarily mean you can connect whatever arrives. The circuit, protection, cable size, isolation and available capacity all need to be suitable for the equipment.

So if new machinery, commercial kitchen equipment, EV charging or other higher-powered equipment is on the shopping list, check the electrics before it turns up.

Our latest guide explains what three-phase power is, when businesses tend to need it and what to check before investing in new equipment:

Electrical work in a commercial kitchen isn’t just about getting power from A to B.

There’s equipment to work around, people who need to use the space, access for maintenance, safety requirements and the small matter of keeping a busy kitchen running.

The best solution isn’t always the quickest or easiest one to install.

It’s the one that works properly for the people who’ll be using it long after we’ve packed the tools away.

Good electrical work fits around the business. Not the other way round.
