Today 150 years ago Theodore Mansel Talbot died; aged 37 years. We give thanks for his faith, life and legacy, which continues to this day at Margam Abbey; whose Anglo Catholic interior and style of worship was his achievement, and where on the 23rd of June, in a private funeral, he was laid to rest in the Talbot family vault.
He was Warden of the 19,000-acre parish of Margam and his early death at the age of 37, cut short a life of expectation and duty; as only son and heir of CRM Talbot MP; richest commoner in Britain, who was owner of the Margam and Penrice Estates and mother Lady Charlotte. Much loved brother of Emily Charlotte, Bertha and Isabella.
Theodore was a popular man, with many interests as: Provincial Grandmaster of Monmouthshire and South Wales Freemasons; Lieutenant Colonel in the (Margam Detachment) of the 1st Glamorgan Rifle Volunteers; President of the Glamorgan Agricultural Society; Justice of the Peace; Captain of the local ‘Bando (a primitive form of hockey) team; Master of the Glamorganshire Fox Hounds often seen astride his hunter ‘Yellow Jack’ and above all, a caring and devoted Christian, his faith at the centre of his life ‘I only live for God's glory’; ministering to the poor in the parish of St Alban’s with the dynamic young priest, Father Arthur Stanton, before returning to ‘the church he loved at Margam’.
Theodore means ‘Gift of God’ and surrounded by his legacy at Margam Abbey, we give thanks for his life, legacy and enduring faith.
