Hidden Life of the Woods: Discovering Woodland Invertebrates! 🍂🐌

Last Friday, Liam and Christian (Sparrow) from Glo i Natur CIC led a fantastic, well-attended invertebrate training day on behalf of the Neath Port Talbot Local Nature Partnership , exploring Cwm Du Glen & Glanrhyd Plantation Local Nature Reserve in Pontardawe.

The group spent the day searching for some of the woodland’s less obvious wildlife, turning over logs and rocks and sieving leaf litter to uncover the incredible diversity of invertebrates living beneath our feet.

Among the finds were Ghost Slug, Silky Snail, Winter Semi-slug, Banded Centipede, Spotted Snake Millipede and Eyed Flat-backed Millipede, along with plenty more fascinating species.

🔎 Some standout discoveries included:
🕷️The pseudoscorpion Neobisium carcinoides, a first-ever sighting for many of those attending
🕷️The millipede Turdulisoma cf. turdulorum, a remarkable species discovered new to science by Christian in South Wales in 2017
🕷️The harvestman Sabacon viscayanum, a species native to the Pyrenees
🕷️The millipede Ceratosphys amoena, first recorded in Britain from South Wales in 2014

Bywyd Cudd y Coetir: Darganfod Infertebratau’r Coetir! 🍂🐌

Ddydd Gwener diwethaf, cynhaliodd Liam a Christian (Sparrow) o Glo i Natur ddiwrnod hyfforddi gwych a phoblogaidd ar infertebratau ar ran Partneriaeth Natur Leol Castell-nedd Port Talbot, gan grwydro Gwarchodfa Natur Leol Cwm Du a Phlanhigfa Glan-rhyd ym Mhontardawe.

Treuliodd y grŵp y diwrnod yn chwilio am rai o drigolion llai amlwg y coetir, gan droi boncyffion a cherrig a hidlo dail marw i ddarganfod yr amrywiaeth anhygoel o infertebratau sy’n byw o dan ein traed.

Ymhlith y rhywogaethau a ddarganfuwyd roedd gwlithen ysbryd, malwen sidanaidd, hanner-gwlithen y gaeaf, cantroed bandiog, miltroed neidr smotiog a miltroed cefn gwastad llygaidog, ynghyd â llawer mwy o infertebratau diddorol.

Life in the Leaf Litter at Tonna Woodland! 🍂🕷️

We had a fantastic morning with Glo i Natur CIC exploring Tonna Woodland and the nearby Neath Canal as part of our Life in the Leaf Litter: A Woodland Invertebrate Walk.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us to discover some of the often-overlooked wildlife living amongst the leaf litter, deadwood and fungi on the woodland floor.

There were plenty of signs of autumn, with fungi including Lilac Fibrecap, Sulphur Tuft, Turkey Tail and Birch Polypore recorded along the route. Looking closely at Sycamore leaves, we also found galls caused by tiny mites and the distinctive Sycamore Tar-spot fungus.

Our invertebrate highlights included Ivy Bee, Parent Bug, Hawthorn Shieldbug, Common Green Shieldbug, False Flat-backed Millipede, Discus Snail, Sputnik Spider and the fascinating Pyrenean harvestman Sabacon viscayanum.

Thank you again to everyone who came along and helped us uncover some of Tonna's hidden wildlife. Events like these are a great opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about the incredible biodiversity on our doorstep.

Cawsom fore gwych gyda Glo i Natur CIC yn archwilio Coetir Tonna a Chamlas Castell-nedd gerllaw fel rhan o'n taith Bywyd ymysg y Dail: Taith Infertebratau'r Coetir.

Diolch yn fawr i bawb a ymunodd â ni i ddarganfod rhai o'r creaduriaid gwyllt sy'n aml yn cael eu hanwybyddu, sy'n byw ymysg y dail sydd wedi disgyn, pren marw a ffyngau ar lawr y goedwig.

Roedd digon o arwyddion yr hydref i'w gweld, gyda ffyngau megis Lilac Fibrecap, Sulphur Tuft, Turkey Tail a Birch Polypore yn cael eu cofnodi ar hyd y daith. Wrth edrych yn fanwl ar ddail y goeden Sycamorwydden, gwelsom hefyd geudyllau (galls) a achoswyd gan widdon bychain a'r ffwng nodedig Tar-spot y Sycamorwydden.

The woodland is bursting with hidden life! Join us at Tonna Woodland, Neath, on Saturday 26th September, 11:00–13:00, to discover the fascinating creatures living beneath our feet.

Autumn offers one final peak in invertebrate activity before winter arrives. With damp conditions returning, leaf litter building up and fungi providing food and shelter, the woodland floor becomes a haven for wildlife.

Turn over logs, explore leaf litter and investigate tree bark to uncover millipedes, centipedes, woodlice, beetles and much more. Along the way, learn about their amazing lifecycles, ecological roles, and why deadwood and decay are vital for woodland biodiversity.
