The hot dry weather of the last week dried up the breeding pools on the marshes and more recent thunder storms have not significantly replenished them. Very few larvae and pupae are to be found surviving in the very shallow remnants of a few pools which may well soon dry up completely unless there is a lot of heavy rain.
Nevertheless, significant numbers of adult mosquitoes remain, though not caught in all our traps. Given the weather, especially if it becomes more humid and not excessively hot, there remains a significant mosquito biting risk in the coming week.
As well as mosquitoes originating from the marshes, there are also some other species around in smaller numbers, many of which will bite humans (for example Anopheles plumbeus, which breeds in water filled holes in trees). However the larvae which you may find in your water butts or any other external water container at this time of year and over the summer are almost certainly a species called Culex pipiens which very rarely bite humans, instead targeting birds.

A statement in response to the lack of bunting in Neston:

Neston Town Council made the decision not to install bunting this year due to the high costs associated with the installation, maintenance, replacement and removal of said bunting, being £3,250 (+VAT).

In 2026/27, for this year's event, Neston Town Council has supported the Female Society with a £2,800 donation for road closure, entertainment and first aid provision on the day

We wish Neston Female Society a successful event on 4th June.

What can I do to protect myself from mosquito bites?

Insecticide sprays kill adults and can be used in houses and on flying and resting adults. Always read the label and product information before use.
The simplest way to reduce the biting risk is to cover up, with loose-fitting, pale clothing. Other effective methods to prevent bites are the use of repellents, as creams or sprays . The best products contain one of these four compounds:
• · DEET
• · IR-3535
• · Picaridin (also known as Icaridin)
• · Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus/PMD (this is a natural product)

These products are available in chemists in the Neston area and can also be purchased online. Always read the label and product information before use, especially if you intend to use on children.
The following do NOT work
• · eucalyptus/citronella/lemon eucalyptus (this is different from the Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus/PMD mentioned above)
• · Sonic mosquito repellers
• · Herbal extract bracelets
• · Avon’s Skin So Soft (not used by the SAS despite what the internet may suggest!).
• · Vitamins/garlic/alcohol/gin ……..
In general, insect repellents should be:
• · applied to all areas of exposed skin not covered by clothing
• · applied after sunscreen (be aware that the protection from your sunscreen may be reduced by the repellent, therefore use sunscreen with 30-50 SPF to ensure you are protected)
• · reapplied regularly,
• · reapplied after swimming, washing or excessive sweating
• · applied carefully around the face and eyes. Be careful not to breathe in the repellent – if using a spray, spray it onto your hands and then rub onto your face, avoiding your eyes
• kept away from synthetic clothes or plastics as it may damage them, for example credit cards, phones, watches or glasses.

The weather in the last few weeks has not been dry enough for the breeding pools on the marshes to dry out (unlike in most years by this time) and there are still pools harbouring larvae and pupae ready to emerge as the weather warms. Indeed, significant numbers of marsh mosquitoes have been caught in our traps this week (and to a lesser extent last week) The weather that is forecast for the Bank Holiday weekend and next week is perfect for adult mosquito survival and activity. In consequence, there is a significant biting risk in the forthcoming week.
