It’s never too early to teach children how to stay safe around water.

This Child Safety week, we’re supporting important water safety education for young children and families with accessible resources through StayWise.

Like this video from Shropshire Fire and Rescue, that uses Makaton signs and simple safety messages that children can learn:

🛑 Stop and think
👫 Stay together
🛟 Float to live
📞 Call 999 in an emergency

Whether you’re visiting the coast, rivers, lakes or enjoying days out across Lincolnshire, understanding water safety can help save lives.

If a fire breaks out onboard, seconds matter.

Make sure your crew knows the emergency plan: raise the alarm, isolate fuel or power if safe, and use extinguishers early.

Never put yourself at risk trying to save equipment. Your safety comes first!

If in doubt, don’t fight a fire yourself. Get out, stay out, call 999 / ch16 for help and wait for the fire and rescue services.

Familiarise yourself with safety advice from the RNLI, and prepare for emergencies.

Boat fire safety starts before you leave the dock.

Fires on boats can spread incredibly fast, so good preparation is essential.

Check your fire extinguishers are fully charged, accessible, and within their expiry date before every trip.

Make sure that everyone onboard knows where they are and how to use them.

Cold water shock affects even the strongest of swimmers, don't jump into water unless it's an emergency. If you or someone else falls in, remember FLOAT to live.

👨‍👩‍👧 FAMILY SUPPORT FOR SAFE DRIVING

Driving is often closely linked to independence, so family support should be positive and encouraging.

✔ How families can help:
Talk openly about driving confidence
Offer lifts for night-time or long journeys
Help with car maintenance reminders
Encourage refresher driving courses if needed
Focus on staying independent safely

💬 Helpful conversation starter:
“Would it help if I lent a hand with longer or unfamiliar journeys?”

❤️ Small changes can help to keep independence for longer.

Fire safety on boats – plan your escape!

Would you know how to keep safe if a fire broke out when on a boat?

Don’t wait for a fire before planning your escape. Follow these top tips to help you stay safe:

⛵ Do not enter a smoke-filled space
⛵ If you are already in a smoke-filled space, get low down where the air is clearer
⛵ If you need to break glass to escape, try to use a blanket to prevent injury
⛵ Starve the fire of air - don’t open engine hatches or doors unless you have to
⛵ If you are inland or moored near to land move everybody off the boat and call 999 immediately

If in doubt, don’t fight a fire yourself. Get out, stay out, call 999 / ch16 for help and wait for the fire and rescue services.

Warm weather does not mean warm water.

Our waters in the UK are always cold enough to send even the strongest swimmer into cold water shock, an involuntary response that can cause hyperventilation, loss of strength and co-ordination within seconds.

If you end up in the water, fight the urge to thrash or swim, and remember to FLOAT to live:
- Tilt your head back
- Keep your ears submerged
- Relax and control your breathing
- Move your hands to stay afloat
- Once calm, call for help

You don't want to cook up a storm when you’re on a boat.

Keep it smooth sailing by following these top tips to help you stay safe onboard:

⛵ Turn cooking appliances off properly after use
⛵ Never leave cooking unattended
⛵ Take extra care when cooking with oil
⛵ Avoid cooking when tired. Remember, medication and alcohol can cause drowsiness
⛵ Keep the cooking area clean for safety, a build-up of grease could catch light.
⛵ Spark devices are safer than matches or lighters to light gas cookers, because they don’t have a naked flame
⛵ Only use portable appliances onshore and don’t change gas canisters inside the cabin or covered areas
⛵ Barbecues shouldn’t be used on boats. Hot charcoal gives off dangerous amounts of CO and blown embers could set your boat alight
⛵ Keep cabin ventilation clear to prevent a build-up of toxic CO

See someone struggling in water? Cold water shock can happen to even the strongest of swimmers, so don't go in after them.

Tell them to FLOAT, call 999, and throw something they can grab on to or use to float.

Following the recent tragedy, we’re reminding people of the lifesaving FLOAT advice.

If you unexpectedly enter the water:
- Tilt your head back
- Keep your ears submerged
- Relax and control your breathing
- Move your hands to stay afloat
- Once calm, call for help

Cold water shock can affect anyone. Even on the hottest of days in the UK, our waters are cold enough to send even the strongest swimmer into this involuntary reaction.

If someone else is in trouble, call 999 and encourage them to FLOAT, don’t go in after them.

HMOs & Renting

🔥 Fires in shared housing can spread quickly due to multiple occupants and shared spaces.

Fire safety is essential in HMOs.

Landlords must:
Install smoke alarms on every floor
Maintain fire doors and escape routes

Tenants should:
Test alarms regularly
Report faults immediately
Never interfere with safety equipment

Everyone plays a role in staying safe.
