Can you imagine clinging to the wreckage of this aircraft in open water, miles away from land?

For two Irish pilots, this was real life as they were forced to ditch into the sea off the Ceredigion coast following mechanical difficulties.

They were found sitting on top of the wreckage waiting for help when they were rescued by our volunteers from New Quay Lifeboat station, RNLI Cardigan Lifeboat, RNLI Fishguard Lifeboat and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, in this emergency multi-agency response.

They received expert casualty care and a hot drink before spending one night in hospital due to shock.

We're so grateful the casualties were okay ๐Ÿ’™

In a heart-warming show of gratitude, the pilots recently returned to New Quay Lifeboat Station to thank their rescuers, presenting a commemorative clock and an incredible โ‚ฌ10,000 donation raised by the Irish aviation community to support our lifesaving work.

'Itโ€™s difficult to put into words how grateful we are to everyone who helped us that evening. From the moment the rescue operation began we knew we were in the hands of highly skilled professionals.

We want to thank the crews from New Quay, Cardigan and Fishguard RNLI, as well as HM Coastguard, for their incredible response and for bringing us safely home to our families.'

Congratulations to crew member Robyn Beresford who yesterday passed out as Tier 1 crew on our all-weather lifeboat.

To qualify as Tier 1 crew, crew members must demonstrate competence in a wide range of theoretical and practical seamanship activities, including policies and procedures, launch and recovery, rope work, anchoring, towing, radio operations, locating and assisting casualties, local knowledge, plus a lot more.

Well done Robyn!

๐Ÿ“Ÿ๐Ÿ“Ÿ Launch ALB ๐Ÿ“Ÿ๐Ÿ“Ÿ Launch ILB

Yesterday was a busy day for our crew, with our all-weather lifeboat launching at midday to support the 150th Cardigan Bay Regatta, before both boats launched on exercise at 18:00.

As we completed our training exercise, the ALB received a tasking from Milford Haven Coastguard after a Mayday call was heard in the area.

The ALB was initially tasked to carry out a radar search to the north of New Quay. As further information was received, the ALB was retasked to carry out a search between New Quay and Aberystwyth.

At the same time, our inshore lifeboat was requested to launch and carry out a shoreline search northwards from New Quay, while our colleagues at Aberystwyth RNLI were tasked to carry out a shoreline search to the south of Aberystwyth, towards New Quay.

As the ALB completed it's search northwards and began searching back towards New Quay, the two inshore lifeboats met half way and began searching back towards their respective stations.

At 22:30, the lifeboats were stood down and the ALB escorted the ILB back to New Quay, with the crews getting back to shore at midnight.

๐Ÿ“Ÿ๐Ÿ“Ÿ At 17:47 yesterday evening, our inshore lifeboat was requested to launch following a 999 call.

It had already been a busy day for our crew, following an afternoon of training and assessment but, only minutes after the ILB had been recovered and washed down and was being made ready for service, the pagers were sounding.

A dog had snatched its lead from its owner's hand on the beach at Aberarth and was swimming out to sea. The ILB was on scene within 15 minutes and soon spotted Jack the spaniel swimming towards Aberaeron.

When we rescue dogs, they're often very wary of bright orange boats and start swimming away, but Jack was obviously cold and tired by this point and gladly accepted a lift back to the beach, where he was reunited with his owners.

Remember, if you see anyone in difficulty on the coast or at sea (whether human or animal), call 999 and ask for Coastguard.

Last night, the two people who were rescued when their aircraft ditched 10 miles offshore in Cardigan Bay, returned to New Quay with their families to thank RNLI volunteers from New Quay, RNLI Cardigan Lifeboat and RNLI Fishguard Lifeboat who were involved in the rescue.

They presented a commemorative clock and a cheque for โ‚ฌ10,000, which will be shared between the three RNLI stations. Also present was the Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Miss Sara Edwards, who thanked the RNLI volunteers for their commitment to saving lives at sea, before the crews and our guests enjoyed a barbecue.

It was great to see JP and Jim and their families, and we would all like to thank them for their amazing fundraising efforts, which largely came from the aviation community in Ireland.
