Into the archives...

This striking aerial image of Newark Castle is attributed to John Kenneth St Joseph, an archaeologist and RAF veteran of the Second World War who helped transform how we understand historic landscapes.

St Joseph was a pioneer in the use of aerial photography for archaeological research. This photograph was likely taken in the 1950s, when he was curator of aerial photography at Cambridge University, working with the RAF who captured images for his research without charge.

It’s a fascinating piece of history from a more modern perspective.

🏰✨ The Steels Rise at Newark Castle! | New Blog Live

“The design philosophy is clear: honesty, clarity, respect. The new should look new, and the old should remain unmistakably old.”

If you’ve passed by recently, you might have noticed something changing on the skyline. The steel frame for the new Visitor Centre is starting to take shape, and for the first time, you can really see how this part of the Gatehouse Project will sit alongside the historic castle.
Our latest blog takes you onto the site to share what’s been happening; from a carefully protected historic well to the early stages of the garden room, and the thinking behind those newly visible steels.

There’s real care being taken to protect what’s already here, reveal more of the castle’s story, and create access to spaces that have been out of reach for generations.

It’s a fascinating moment in the project, and well worth a closer look.

Seeing the front of the Gatehouse transformed in our time lapse really brings the project to life. From the very beginning digging out the new entrance to creating the new platform and garden room, there’s been so much progress!

One of the most exciting details is watching the stonemasons at work, carefully adding stonework onto the new structure. It’s a brilliant example of old and new coming together, helping to shape a welcoming new arrival experience while staying true to the character of the site.

Well, well, well... what have we uncovered!

Last month we discovered a hidden well in our gatehouse, around five metres deep, alongside drainage channels and a post hole. Since then, we’ve been keen to get to the bottom of it (quite literally), and learn more about what’s down there.

This week, our archaelogists at Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd returned with the help of the Lincoln Caving Club. Following site visits and planning, four of their members carefully descended into the well to retrieve samples.

Keep an eye out for more updates soon!

We work very closely with Historic England to make sure that we make the right decisions to protect and preserve Newark Castle. When a long vertical crack was discovered in this 16th century chimney, we invited Hayley from HE to inspect it and advise us on the right approach. The chimney was at risk of collapse without urgent intervention.

It can take time to seek advice, develop a plan, and wait for written approval from the Secretary of State to carry out essential works. In this case, we were advised to:
- Carefully record the stonework with photogrammetry and archaeological drawings
- Take down the chimney stone by stone to a point below the base of the crack
- Rebuild the chimney, with recognisable stones replaced in their original positions
- Repurpose any stone which was too weathered for the chimney – it will be used to infill new walls

Want to see for yourself? Stand near the bridge and look up above the top level of scaffolding. You might see the masons painstakingly rebuilding the chimney.

The site team went above and beyond this week, carrying out a duckling rescue! 🐥

11 ducklings and their mum were trapped in a dungeon. Matthew, Ellis and Robbie didn't quack under the pressure!

They climbed in, carefully eggstracted the ducks and released them happily into the river.

POV: you’re fixing some cables and accidentally uncover medieval history 🔍

Just another week at Newark Castle, where even the most routine jobs come with an archaeologist on standby. As a scheduled monument, every trench is carefully watched, and this one had a surprise waiting beneath the gatehouse floor.

Using photogrammetry to record the site in 3D, the team uncovered a hidden well around five metres deep, along with intriguing features like old drainage channels and a post hole. The well is currently capped and only accessible through a small opening, but with permission, we’re hoping to take a closer look soon!

🏰More exploring to come…
