Take care during the extreme heat this weekend ☀️

With temperatures set to remain high, an Amber Heat-health Alert is in place from 9pm on 26 June until 9am on 28 June.

The hot weather is putting extra pressure on everyone, including our emergency services, so we're asking residents to take care, look out for one another and help reduce unnecessary demand on blue light services.

Top tips to stay safe:

💧 Drink plenty of water and avoid excessive alcohol.
🏠 Keep your home cool by closing curtains or blinds on sunny windows.
🌳 Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm where possible.
👒 Wear sunscreen, light clothing and a hat, and take water with you if you're out.
❤️ Check on elderly neighbours, vulnerable friends and relatives to make sure they're keeping cool and hydrated.
🐾 Keep pets cool with plenty of water and shade, avoid walking dogs during the hottest part of the day, and never leave pets in parked vehicles, even for a few minutes.

🔥 Help prevent wildfires
The countryside is extremely dry, so please don't light BBQs or campfires in open spaces, dispose of ci******es safely, and take your litter home.

🌊 Stay safe around water
Open water may look inviting but can be dangerous. Never jump in, avoid swimming alone, supervise children closely, and call 999 if someone is in trouble.

🚑 Please only call 999 in a genuine emergency to help keep ambulances available for those who need them most.

Let's all do our bit to stay safe, support our neighbours and protect our communities during this hot weather.

We’re pleased to share that Marlborough Highways will be our new highways partner from October 2026.

This long-term contract will help us continue delivering safe, reliable roads across West Berkshire, covering everything from pothole repairs to streetlighting and drainage.

We’ll be working together with a focus on quality, efficiency and a great experience for residents. This includes smarter planning of works and more efficient repairs.

The contract also brings environmental benefits, including a carbon-neutral service from day one, alongside support for local jobs, skills and businesses.

We’re looking forward to working together to keep West Berkshire moving.

Parking at Northcroft and Goldwell has been exceptionally busy over the last few days as more people head to the Lido to enjoy the sunshine ☀️

With both car parks often full, we’re asking visitors to please consider alternative nearby options. There are several car parks just a short walk away, including Northcroft Lane West and Northbrook Street multi-storey.

Bike racks are available at Northcroft, and car sharing can also help reduce demand where possible.

Please avoid parking on verges or roadside areas, as this can cause disruption for residents and emergency access.

⚠️ Service Update – Recycling Collections ⚠️

Due to the ongoing hot weather, we have been unable to complete all scheduled collections today in the following areas:

If your bins or containers were not emptied today (Thursday 25 June), please leave them out at your usual collection location. Our crews will aim to return and collect them tomorrow (Friday 26 June).

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to keep our crews safe in these conditions.

☀️ A big thank you to the crews who are continuing to work hard in very challenging temperatures.

A full list of roads/streets not collected today will be updated on www.westberks.gov.uk/missedbin

As temperatures stay high, it’s important we look out for one another – especially older residents and anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

A quick phone call, a knock on the door, or even a simple message can make a real difference. For some people, the heat can be isolating and difficult to cope with, and they may not always feel able to ask for help.

If you can, please take a moment to check in on relatives, neighbours, and friends. You might be able to help by:

🚰 making sure they have enough water
🆒 helping keep their home cool
🛒 picking up shopping or prescriptions
💛 offering some company and reassurance

By looking out for each other, we can make sure everyone feels supported and safe during the hot weather.

We were delighted to welcome senior representatives from the Department for Transport to West Berkshire last Friday to see first-hand how we're investing in our highways network and active travel routes.

Alongside our partner VolkerHighways, we showcased the work being done to keep our roads in good condition and create safer, more accessible journeys for everyone.

The visit follows our strong performance in highway maintenance, including achieving a ‘green’ rating for our highway maintenance activities, recognising our commitment to high standards and long-term investment in our local infrastructure.

We’re pleased to have delivered a programme of fencing and boundary improvements at Hampstead Norreys C of E Primary School, helping to enhance site security and safety for pupils, staff and visitors.

Completed in December, the project included the installation of new 2m-high weldmesh fencing and gates, a fully upgraded main entrance, and improved boundaries around the north, east, south and west of the site. Additional works included new car park railings, reconfigured pedestrian gates to help reduce climbing risks, and vegetation clearance to create a safer, tidier environment.

These improvements will help the school manage access more effectively while maintaining a secure, well-controlled and fit-for-purpose learning environment. We’re proud to support projects that strengthen safeguarding and deliver lasting benefits for children, teachers and the wider school community.
