Work is now under way to repair a prominent historic building on Newcastle High Street.

The building, located in the town centre conservation area, had developed structural issues to its upper section which needed to be made safe.

Council officers have been working with the owner to ensure the right steps are taken, with all works to be approved in line with building regulations once complete.

The project includes partial demolition and rebuilding of part of the wall. Planning permission was granted earlier this year, and while there have been some delays, work has now started.

You may notice scaffolding in place. Due to the height of the building and safety risks, this is currently extended into the street, but it will be adjusted as the work progresses.

Protecting and improving the High Street remains a priority — and it’s good to see work now moving forward on this important building.

We're creating a new pet crematorium in Newcastle-under-Lyme after receiving planning permission 🐾

Our Loved and Loyal Pet Crematorium will offer a local, appointment-only service for residents at Bradwell Crematorium. It will give families a dignified and affordable way to say goodbye to much-loved pets.

The dedicated facility will offer guaranteed individual cremations for pets of all sizes, from small birds and rabbits to extra-large dogs. We will use specialist equipment that is completely separate from the main crematorium.

A private farewell room will also give owners the opportunity to spend some final time with their pet in a peaceful and personal setting before cremation.

The new facility will be in a detached, single-storey building next to the main car park. We expect it to open by the end of the year.

Prices will start from £75 for a small pet, rising to £275 for an extra-large dog.
Construction work will be limited and will not affect the normal operation of Bradwell Crematorium.

Before we can open the service, we will also need to secure a licence from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

We are demanding that the Government explains how it reached its decision on Local Government Reorganisation in Staffordshire.

We have sent a pre-action protocol letter to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. In the letter, we ask the Government to explain precisely what information the previous Secretary of State, Steve Reed, considered when deciding to merge Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Moorlands into a new North Staffordshire unitary authority.

🗣️ Council Leader Jonathan Gullis said: “We want the Government to show us its working so we can properly understand how this decision was reached, what evidence was considered and whether the process was fair and robust.

“Once we have seen that information and considered the Government’s response, we can then take further legal advice and decide what legal avenues, if any, may be available to Newcastle-under-Lyme to challenge the decision.”

Under the Government's plans, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and Stoke-on-Trent City Council will be abolished and replaced by a single unitary authority in spring 2028.

A shadow authority will be created in May 2027. It will begin planning how the services will be brought together and take on responsibilities from Staffordshire County Council, which is also being abolished.

Staffordshire’s other councils – Stafford, Cannock Chase, East Staffordshire, Lichfield, Tamworth and South Staffordshire – will form a second, separate unitary authority.

There’s still time to take part in our consultation on how green spaces across Newcastle-under-Lyme are managed.

The PSPO helps us deal with issues like dog fouling, anti-social behaviour and misuse of our parks and open spaces.

We want to make sure the rules are fair, effective and reflect what matters to residents.

Big changes coming to Bradwell Di**le 👀

Work is moving forward on a £500,000 upgrade to create a more modern, accessible and family-friendly park.

The first phase includes:
✅ A larger playground with 70+ play features
✅ New outdoor gym equipment
✅ Improved access for wheelchair users
✅ Better access for pushchairs

This is all about making sure our parks work for everyone — children, families and visitors of all ages.

More improvements will follow, including landscaping and a new pump track.

100 days of delivery in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Since the current administration was installed, work has focused on delivering local priorities and day-to-day improvements across the borough.

Here’s what’s been delivered so far:
✅ Over £11m in planned net zero spending will not go ahead
A review of capital projects has identified spending that will no longer be progressed, helping to reduce planned costs and borrowing requirements.

✅ Action on illegal v**e and to***co sales in the town centre
Working with partners, enforcement action has been taken to tackle the sale of illegal products.

✅ Investment in parks and green spaces
New pump tracks are being delivered at Bradwell Di**le and Lyme Valley, improving facilities for cycling and wheeled sports.

✅ Big Borough Clean-Up delivered across communities
Local clean-up activity has taken place across towns and villages, supporting pride in local neighbourhoods.

✅ Work underway to manage concentrations of HMOs
Steps are being taken to address the clustering of houses in multiple occupation in residential areas.

✅ £2,500 per councillor for local projects
Each councillor has been allocated funding to support community-led initiatives in their ward.

There has also been continued progress on:
➡️ Regeneration of Newcastle town centre
➡️ Job creation and investment at Chatterley Park
➡️ Protecting green space through the Local Plan

These are the places that help tell the story of our towns and villages — from familiar buildings and memorials to signs, sculptures and everyday features residents pass all the time.

We’re asking people to help make sure these places are not overlooked and are properly recognised for their local importance.

It’s Jazz & Blues weekend in Newcastle-under-Lyme 🎶

From Friday 28 to Monday 31 August, the town centre will be packed with live music across dozens of venues.

Organised by Newcastle-under-Lyme BID, the festival brings together 50+ acts playing everything from jazz and blues to soul, funk and acoustic sets.
