STATEMENT: RESIGNATION OF TOWN WARD COUNCILLOR CHRISTINE DUFFY

I have just received news of the resignation of Town Ward councillor Christine Duffy.

Serving as an elected representative is a privilege and an important responsibility, and I am sorry that Christine does not feel able to fulfil the term of office she was elected to serve in May 2026.

Being a councillor can be demanding, and there can be many pressures involved in representing residents and contributing to the work of the Council. I have every sympathy for anyone who finds themselves unable to honour their responsibility to the people for whatever reason.

My thoughts are with her at this time, and I wish her well for the future.

My focus – as ever – remains on ensuring that the residents of Town Ward – in the heart of Newcastle-under-Lyme continue to have a strong voice and that their concerns are properly represented.

Residents deserve councillors who are present, accessible and committed to working on their behalf, and I will continue to do everything I can to represent our community and – working alongside Newcastle’s voice in Parliament, Adam Jogee MP – get things done for local people.

The inevitable end to a farcical chapter of Reform incompetence and mismanagement at the Borough Council. Putting Newcastle-under-Lyme in the national headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Questions must be asked about Reform's selection processes and its lack of support for councillors to serve the people they should represent.

Town ward deserves hard-working councillors on the side of residents, working for them every day, like Cllr Sheelagh Casey-Hulme

A by-election will be held for a single seat on Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council in the Town ward.

A date for the election will be announced in due course.

The vacancy follows the resignation of borough councillor Christine Duffy. The resignation letter was dated 20 August 2026 and received by the Proper Officer on 21 August 2026.

The other councillor for Town ward, Cllr Sheelagh Casey-Hulme, is unaffected and continues in her role.

Further information will be shared once arrangements for the by-election are confirmed.

Great to see real progress at Bradwell Di**le

Before the last election, Bradwell Labour councillors fought hard for these improvements and the £500,000 investment now being delivered, with new equipment being installed part of their proposals for the site.

Though it is disappointing too see the CCTV investment has been removed by the new administration!
