Next month marks a very special milestone for Melanie Jewitt, activity co-ordinator on Ward 4 (previously also Ward 2) at Hexham General Hospital, who will celebrate 10 years in the role supporting elderly patients.
Melanie previously worked as an auxiliary nurse before becoming the ward's first activity co-ordinator, creating a role that has since become her passion and has brought joy and companionship to countless patients.
From pamper sessions and afternoon teas to craft activities and movie afternoons, Melanie works tirelessly to create moments of joy, helping patients stay active, engaged and less isolated during their hospital stay.
Some of her ideas include a talking tabard featuring familiar items such as dolls, dummies and sewing thimbles to spark memories, as well as activity boards featuring old tools, locks and tape measures that help patients reminisce about their younger years.
Her work is about much more than activities. It's about helping patients smile, share memories and feel less lonely during their time in hospital.
As Melanie approaches 10 years in the role, we'd like to thank her for the compassion she brings to Ward 4 💙
