ARMY RESERVE SIXES

Army Reserve Sixes were held at Abingdon on the 8th - 9th August

After a competitive first day, 5 Fusiliers played five matches resulting in 2 wins, 2 defeats and a draw (and a +10 goal difference), enough to qualify for the Shield Trophy the following day.

71 Sigs were the 1st opponents the next day, with 5 Fusiliers eventually running out 2-1 winners to secure a place in the final to face the Royal Yeomanry. The final produced a toughly fought match resulting in a 1-1 draw at full time, leading to the match being decided on penalties. Goalkeeper Fus Harding was the hero with 2 excellent saves, leaving the ever-reliable LCpl Profit to fire in the winner; the team sealing a 4-3 penalty win to lift the Shield Trophy.

RACE ACROSS THE OCEAN

This week Fusilier Staples-Jones from Z Company, 5 FUSILIERS has been sailing with the army offshore team at Cowes week on British Soldier, the army’s premier offshore boat.

Speaking about the experience, Fus Staples-Jones said “It’s been a great week on the boat, getting to meet some top sailors from across the army and wider Army Sailing Association - my unit have been really supportive and it’s a great example of what you can do with the Army, as a reservist.”

Since 1826 Cowes Week has played a key part in the British sporting summer calendar and is one of the UK's longest running and most successful sporting events. It now stages up to 40 daily races for around 500 boats and is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world.

Congratulations to our newest Fusiliers for successfully passing Phase 1 Training!

Passing Phase 1 is a massive achievement. It marks the transition from civilian to soldier. Over the past few weeks, these individuals from and have mastered basic fieldcraft, physical fitness, weapon handling, and the core values of the Army. They have proven they have the grit, discipline, and determination to serve.

This is just the beginning of their journey. They are now ready to develop specialist skills and make a real difference, all while balancing their civilian careers.

On 1 Aug, FUSILIERS celebrate Minden Day, when the 20th Foot (later the Lancashire Fusiliers) action was described as: "I never thought to see a single line of infantry break through three lines of cavalry ..., and tumble them to ruin"

Minden Day

Today we honour the incredible bravery and legacy of the Fusiliers on Minden Day.On August 1st, 1759, British infantry achieved the near-impossible. Due to a famous misunderstanding of orders, they advanced unsupported against a massive force of French cavalry. In an astonishing display of discipline and steady firepower, the infantry broke the cavalry charges and won a legendary victory.

Before marching into battle, soldiers plucked red and yellow roses from hedgerows to wear in their hats. Today, we wear the Minden Rose with pride to remember their unbelievable courage and enduring spirit.To all serving Fusiliers, veterans and families—happy Minden Day!
