Today preschool have been learning about Numberblock 10, the final number that we teach in nursery. That can only mean one thing, it is getting close to the time when when our children will be leaving us to start at school! We started our number journey way back in September, learning about number 1 and have been introducing the next number on a regular basis once the children have developed a sound knowledge of the previous number. Learning about numbers is the process of building "number sense"—an intuitive and practical understanding of how quantities work. It involves far more than simply memorizing and reciting names; it is a step-by-step progression of foundational cognitive and practical skills. The process of learning about numbers involves mastering several key stages and concepts: Number words and reciting, number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, cardinality, comparison and magnitude, operations, decomposition and composition, and everyday application. Our children have made excellent progress over the last few months and with the help of the Numberblocks have become maths whizzes! They all love numbers and will often make up their own number problems, comparing the number of girls and boys or asking mathematical questions. "Does two and two make four?" Well done preschool, we are super-proud of what you have achieved!

Today preschool had an appointment with Police Community Support Officers Stephen Allanson and Kathryn Kenny at Waterfoot Police Station! They had a tour of the building, including the interview room and the gym, and then they had a meeting with the Sergeant! He talked to the children about the role of the police and they looked at the different equipment they use, then Annette got arrested!! He also told them how to keep themselves safe if they get lost, and talked about road safety and stranger danger. They explored the police van and tried on different uniforms, The sirens were very loud! We had an amazing time and made lots of wonderful memories! Thank you Stephen and Kathryn for making our children feel so welcome. We hope you enjoy your special thank you chocolate!

We have had the most fantastic afternoon! Look out for our photos later to find out who got arrested!!!!!

Five little firemen standing in a row
One, two, three, four, five, they go
Hop on the engine with a shout
Quicker than a wink, the fire is out!
We explored the concept of simple subtraction as we sang the fireman song!

Our children were all very excited after lunch in anticipation of the arrival of a fire engine, but unfortunately an incident occurred and the fire engine had to carry out it's fire fighting duties so was unable to attend. However, the amazing crew from Rawtenstall Fire Station didn't want to leave the children disappointed and called in for a quick visit before tea. They talked to the children about the role of the firefighter, and all the different jobs they carried out and showed them all their different tools. The children got to sit in the fire engine and took turns using the hose! What a fantastic experience for our children! You can see the delight on their little faces!! We are very grateful to the Rawtenstall Fire Station crew for making time to visit our children after a very busy afternoon. The children loved it!

In an ideal world, our week learning about the role of the firefighters would have culminated with a visit from the fire engine. Unfortunately, said fire engine is busy fighting a fire and won't be able to attend. The children had been so excited, but like the troupers that they are have accepted with no fuss that the fire engine is unable to attend because there is a real fire that needs putting out. They are now happily playing firefighters in the garden. The reality of real life, things don't always go according to plan!
