The Nelson ILP Land Society Clarion House was built in 1912 to be a non-profit making co-operative, as a model of how society as a whole ought to be organised with any excess money to be used in spreading the word of socialism.

Brierfield Cycling Club, taken around 1890.
There are names for some of those on the photo:
Far left, William East.
Stood next to William East, John Bates.
Back row, second from the right, Charles Sagar.
Front row, second from the right, Frank Parkinson.
The photograph and information relating to the club were featured in a Nelson Leader article, dated 16th March 1928, in which a member of the club, John Bates, was interviewed by Joe Bates.
According to John Bates:
'The club was named the Brierfield Cycling Club, and would probably be organised about the year 1887. The club room was in a hut, now a petrol pump station, situated between the Wigglesworth Arms and the Cinema. This hut was attached to Sagar's cart cover business across the way.
Sagar's sold new machines and did repairs. Later this place was taken over by Joe East and used as an oatcake bakery, the business afterwards being removed to a better building behind, and is still in the family. I think Sagar's were the moving spirits in starting this club. I am not sure as to the actual number of members, but probably there would be over twenty. I think the membership fee was an annual one, and the officials included the usual secretary and treasurer.
Probably there would be a set of rules, but I remember only one, which stated that there had to be a leader in front, a pusher up behind, and the speed of the club to be that of the slowest rider.'

Lovely to see many people at the Clarion House today. Meanwhile, Charles does a brilliant job of cutting the grass!
