A busy week for projects here in Newlyn Harbour. Seawide Services have arrived to start the fitting of another ten new fender piles around the Pier and Market, whilst JT Fabrications are fitting our last section of coping and D fendering along the Market also.
Wiedner Electricals are doing the prep work for us to move one of our bait fridges to allow better access for HGV's and we have a new floor going down in our Market Public Toilets too...plenty to keep us busy...Alan

Something quite extraordinary has been happening here at Newlyn — and a cancelled flight last week brought it home to me in the most unexpected way.

As Harbour Master I see the catches coming in every day, but I'd never actually sat down and eaten octopus myself. That changed when I found myself stranded at Heathrow and ended up at La Belle Epoque at the Sofitel. On the menu — braised octopus with onion marmalade, roasted butternut purée, capers vinaigrette, tenderstem broccoli and green beans. It was really rather wonderful.

And it came from right here.

Over the past year we've seen an octopus bloom the likes of which hasn't been recorded in British waters for 75 years. Catches have run at almost 65 times the recent annual average, with one of our vessels landing over 20 tonnes in a single trip — a record for the harbour.

Our fleet has adapted brilliantly and we're incredibly proud of them. But most of this octopus still gets exported because we don't eat enough of it at home. If a hotel restaurant at Heathrow can put it on the menu and do it proud, your local fishmonger or restaurant can too.

If you haven't tried Cornish octopus yet, please do seek it out — and share this if you can help spread the word. 🎣 - Jonathan, HM.

My team successfully undertook a tier 2 incident management exercise today, alongside colleagues from Ambipar, and observers from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Marine Management Organisation - MMO, and Natural England, demonstrating that our oil spill response plan is effective and relevant. Some small things to improve on, but on the whole very satisfied. Well done all! - Jonathan, HM.
