Some messages mean that little bit more. 🤍

Today we received this lovely handwritten thank you card from a guest who celebrated her birthday with us at Lamlash House.

It was a real pleasure to welcome her, along with her family and friends, to the house for such a special milestone. Knowing that everyone enjoyed the occasion means a great deal to us.

We also really appreciate the time taken to sit down, write to us and share such kind words. It was a thoughtful gesture and one that the Johnathan and Gordon genuinely appreciated.

Thank you for choosing Lamlash House to be part of such a memorable birthday celebration. We hope there are many more happy celebrations to come. 🥂

In September 1886, Miss Catherine Cranston opened the Ingram Street Tearooms in Glasgow, beginning a story that would become an important part of the city’s design and social history.

The tearooms later became closely associated with the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose distinctive approach to interiors, furniture and decorative detail helped shape some of Glasgow’s most recognisable design heritage.

Here at Lamlash House, our Banking Hall pays homage to elements of the Ingram Street Tearoom interior schemes, drawing inspiration from the balance of strong architectural lines, decorative detail and unmistakably Glasgow character associated with Mackintosh’s work.

It is one of the many layers of history and design that make Lamlash House such a special building. A connection between Ayrshire and Glasgow, past and present, and a reminder that great design can continue to influence spaces more than a century later.

Flashback to 2020… Martha & Jim’s Ruby Wedding at Lamlash House.

Today we’re looking back through the Lamlash House archives to a very special celebration for Martha and Jim, marking an incredible 40 years of marriage. ❤️

These photographs also capture a moment in history that feels quite strange to look back on now. Covid restrictions were part of everyday life, with guests following the rules in place for entering and moving around the venue.

Masks, distancing and restrictions may have changed how celebrations looked for a while, but they certainly didn’t take away from the reason everyone was there.

Family, friends and 40 years of memories together made this a Ruby Wedding worth celebrating.

On Thursday 15th October 2026, the Millers & Merchants Tour returns with an immersive day exploring the people, industries and stories that helped shape Newmilns. The experience includes a visit to MYB Textiles, an animated tour of Lamlash House taking you back to 1901, plus a light lunch along the way.

It’s a chance to discover the area’s rich heritage through the places, trades and everyday lives behind it, all brought together in one unique local experience.

Flashback to a Victorian Newmilns bank manager enjoying a day off. 

Meet Robert Carmichael Mitchell.

He’s one of the characters you’ll encounter during the animated experience at Lamlash House — and here he is enjoying a summer trip to Largs.

On Thursday 15th October our Millers & Merchants Tour returns, taking you into the story of Newmilns at a time when the lace industry was thriving and the town’s mills and banks were all part of its busy commercial life.

The day begins at MYB Textiles, where you’ll discover the story of Ayrshire lace and see traditional manufacturing methods still in use today.

Then it’s on to Lamlash House, where history takes on a life of its own.

Over a three-course light lunch in the former banking hall, you’ll meet characters from the house’s past — including bank manager Robert Carmichael Mitchell — through our animated tour.

And as this picture suggests, there’s much more to their lives than ledgers and banking…
